Fishing News January Editiion

31 December 2008

Our biggest issue of summer, at 236 pages, reflects the positive approach many of our industry players despite the so-called economic downturn.

The fish haven’t heard of the recession so go out there and get ‘em!
There is plenty of reading in this bumper holiday mag, with plenty of how-to’s as well as stories of other people’s fishing adventures.

At this time of the year snapper is one of reader’s most popular target species. Mark Kitteridge, a snapper snatcher from way back, has come up with what he believes is the ultimate snapper rig.
Surfcasters Bruce Basher and Kane Wrigglesworth put their spin on an alternative bait and likely spots to find fish respectively while editor Grant Dixon highlights a Great Barrier charter operator who specializes in snapper charters.

Adam Clancey takes a look at how to downsize your terminal tackle to catch wary fish while Chris Lewis puts albacore tuna on a pedestal as a great light tackle gamefish. We take a look at a few different boats this issue. The editor puts the spotlight on one of the best set up sportfishing trailerboats in the country – The ITM Fishing Show’s Stabicraft 759 while sam Mossman’s trailerboat trial focuses on the McLeay 775 Cruiser.

Paul Smith’s Quick Look checks out the Coast Craft 560 Waterjet while Angus Hume outlines fishing in Samoa aboard Gamekeeper, one of eight White Pointers shipped across the Pacific to contest the SIGFA International Billfish Tournament last April/May. John Mort continues his series on setting up a boat for sportfishing while continuing the gamefishing theme, Mike Parsons explains how to make dacron loops in his gamefishing workshop feature.

Earlier in the year as part of its 30th Anniversary celebrations the magazine gave one lucky reader the opportunity to have their small boat ‘pimped’. The recipient was Les Parker and he received his boat back in December after it had been given a total makeover. Another to get a new boat for Christmas was 10-year-old Joshua Davies of Onerahi, the winner of our Mac Boats Take A Kid Fishing promotion. He was delighted with his new Mac boat, just in time for the school holidays. Both stories are covered this issue.
Yellow eyed mullet, more commonly known as sprats, are a part of many families’ holiday fishing action. Josh Worthington sings the praises of this humble fish, especially as a bait.

One of the more interesting stories this month was written by Dave Morrison who spent a night drifting around the Hauraki Gulf after his boat sank, returning from a dusk fishing trip. It is an interesting tale of survival.

Bruce Basher previews the Lion Red 90 Mile Snapper Classic while Graham Andrews concludes his coverage of Kilwell Sports 75th anniversary celebrations. There is plenty of offshore action with diving and fishing in Vanuatu and jigging in Vava’u as well as the normal lineup of regular columnists.

To our readers, merry Christmas and an enjoyable and safe New Year and holiday period from all the NZ Fishing News team. May all your catches be memorable ones.
