Spent last week out on a school camp on Kawau Island.   Talking with the camp managers, really surprised to hear that we are one of the few schools that offers fishing as one of the rotations for the kids.  4 boats in total for fishing - 2 or 3 kids per trip,   Absolutely stunning place for a school camp with Kayaking and sailing also being other water based activities.

A little worried what fishing in the last week of June would be like but we struck a good patch pf weather and managed to find a few nice fish in among the 200 odd undersized snapper that we also caught.  When one only has 1.5 hours per trip (5 trips per day), you have to stay pretty close and the likes of flat rock and the seaward side of the island were generally off limits as simply not enough time.

The kids had an absolute ball and for many, this was their first time out on a boat let alone fishing.    On a couple of sessions we managed to find a nice school of trevs that made for a lot of laughs and very happy kids.   I think we landed over 40 trevs in one session - all bar 2 going back to fight another day but majority in the 35 - 40cm size range.

Most fish caught on flasher rigs but largest 4 snapper for the week caught on a strayline - (split bullet tuna head doing the trick).  Largest snapper went just on 10lb but we also got a handful in the 45 - 50cm range which the kids were stoked about.

On our boat, one boy caught a nice JD of around 2.5kg only to then catch an 80cm kingie on his next drop - both on flasher rigs!!    One boat also managed to boat a Kingie of 95cm - again caught on a flash rig.

In all - a great week with lots of smiles and very happy kids.    They all got to take home a few fillets or kingie steaks as a reminder of their time at camp but plenty of legal fish returned to fight another day.  Really surprised as just how good the fishing was.    Temperature was showing between 13.8 - 14.2 degrees but not sure how accurate this was.
