1: Take lots of ice. Frozen bottles are ok but add sea water 2: Learn how to sharpen a knife. Never use a blunt knife 3: Practice a few knots till you can tie them when it's rough. In the dark 4: Fish light tackle sometime, it will teach you a lot 5: Use big hooks for snapper at least 8/0. 6: Use circle hooks in deep water 30m plus 7: Fish with as many people as you can. This should be number 2 8: Rig baits so they don't bunch up or spin. This should be number 1 9: Don't sweat the hard times. You learn a lot from that 10:Find a local retailer you like. If you like them and they are fishermen, ask their advice. Most of them are in the business because they love the life. They usually do know what they are talking about. 11: Ten isn't enough. Subscribe to the fishing.net area reports. I do know what to do in my neck of the woods. If you fish out in the harbour or off the west coast I won't put you crook. Tidy baits, espec stray line back into current...If a bait spins because of an untidy bait, it usually does so like a propeller , not just spin on a single plain. And #2 would be use as light sinker as possible. |

Certainly for straylining Steps but I prefer a bit of weight for deeper water using ledger rigs and circle hooks. ------------- Best gurnard fisherman in my street |

When we where out west coast last friday.. short notice and most my gear is set up for stray line east coast stuff.. Bin was filling up, all got a good feed and anything more was for family and friends. So decided to throw out a one of my flasher/ feather stray lines, with 3oz on it...and it got hit.. The ledgers we where using the 'west coast damn forgot the anchor, that 8 oz might be enough anyone got a spare 10?' Other than not bringing up 2x mid 40cm on ledgers hanging straight down, occasionally loop another line.... the stray line sat further out the rear in 45/ 55 m water very nice nps .. and more often than not.. got hit on the drop like a SB And 2nd time have done that... PS I use re curve in the keeper and circle hook on the bottom... the sinker is on the clip of the main line and trace attached there as well...enables quick change sinkers and if a fish swallows a hook , quick change of trace... Im always up for trying new stuff, re look at the norm etc...just to see what happens |

And then there is what the charter fleet mostly do so that even inexperienced anglers can catch a decent number of fish consistently in the Hauraki Gulf. 4/0 to 6/0 circle hooks on a two hook ledger rig with 8oz or 10oz 'torpedo' sinker. Pillies for bait cut into 3rds or 4ths as a staple. Hook through the bait only once and gape kept clear. If in a decent current maybe move to a sliding rig but with a short trace (maybe 300mm and enough lead to stay on the bottom. All on 10kg mono with 40 - 80lb trace material. Put one rig each side a bit further back in the current with a slightly smaller ball sinker. There are more fun ways to fish and sometimes more effective ways as well but if you have inexperienced guests onboard this is what I would go to pretty much every time. Just teach them not to strike until the rod is well bent and if you are stopped on fish they will catch them. Just as a note, I have had some killer sessions in the harbour and some other areas fishing with lightish braid and 16oz - 24oz of sinkers on a short trace running rig in really heavy current areas. Most people move away as the current picks up and they think the fish are gone but sometimes the secret is to be really hard on the bottom so just try going all 'Kaipara style' and keep adding weight and making sure you don't spool out too much line on the drop. Might not work every time but when it does you will be smiling.

Does fluro carbon leader really work and enhance your fishing. Does it impede and slow your lures action and movement, so on that basis does a limp and soft mono leader present as a better trace than a supposed invisible and tight one?

Catchelot... Fluro is more durable and apparently less visible to fish than mono. I use a heavy fluro for softbaits because I tend to lift fish in the boat by the trace unless they are pretty large (lazy) I use jiffy clips so the lure/softbait can move with total freedom and I can swap terminal tackle in seconds. My hookup rate is fine. If tying you should use a knot that does not synch down on the leader allowing the tackle to move freely as above. (can't remember the name but someone will advise) It's a simple as knot to tie. |

Some say a flouro/lumo glowing sinker out fished a non flouro sinker and the same rig by 4:1... thoughts? 2 sorts of glow.. floro.. where ligh shines on it glow, light turned off no glow And lumo.. put in sun or UV light and will continue to glow for a while. The former, played with a little, but didnt progress beyond that. Lumo.. that comes into play when depth get to around 20m plus or change of light.. The quality of lumo one may paint onto sinkers .. stray lines, ledgers , lures varies.. I got some good quality long last but is water based... so a mist seal coat of polyurethane sorted that.. last several hrs. The glow sb heads.. those are fluro not lumo. I have also injected lumo paints up into non and "glow" soft baits with a fine syringe...Z man, the popular sbs ( an old thread) happen to be marked "glow" these are a sort lived lumo Again these work best at change of light and deeper water ... when compared with non injected same model sb/ lure. My stray lines have lumo reef sinker end of main line, trace floats out meter or so from there... think it maybe fish sees glow from a distance, has a noisey, picks up the smell, then sees the bait on flasher with feathers etc. |

Steps, I think the fluro being referred to in the above posts is fluorocarbon leader material as opposed to monofilament (nylon) leader. ------------- Best gurnard fisherman in my street |
