Trip report from the Wanganella banks
Just came back from another journey up north to the banks on Destiny
We had been all complaining about the fishing in NZ and the slowish start so when a weather window appeared on the bank we made the quick call and with in minutes the boys where packed and we were on our way north!!
The boys included Neil, Steve, Scoobie, Rob, Marc and myself

We arrived in whangaroa monday night to load up on some livebaits before we would set off tuesday morning with a 50 hour steam infront of us before arriving on the bank
after leaving whangaroa we had our first shot early off north cape but to no avail and that would be it for the day other than eat rigging and sleeping
the next day of steaming with plenty of gear rigging more sleeping and more eating. While eating dessert 2 tailers swim right past us so a quick detour and spin back around and both come into the lures and in 10min our first fish released for the trip

The next 4 days then became a blur of striped marlin heaven!
We tried to take as much video and photos as we can but with 5 anglers and 5 rods and usually all 5 rods going off doesn't leave many hands to operate cameras Embarrassed

So Ill let the photos tell a bit of the story and fill in the blanks

Hard to bet sunsets on the bank

the fish seem to go nuts for some reason up there and ive never seen fish jump so much with 1 fish doing over 50 jumps in a row

4 way hook ups off the bow of the good ship destiny

Light gauge life LOL

even after 80 fish when the blue wings apear it still gets the heart pumping

double up

old mate doing high jump! think he knocked the bar

the deck of destiny

As always the stickbaits get thrown and on this trip Marc was lucky enough to land 2 fish!
the bites are crazy

After marlin fishing till 9:30 every day we had to pick up a couple bass but after the midnight filleting session we only did it the once
but lets be honest it was all we needed

The jigs didnt last over 10 seconds on the bottom while bass fishing!
Man they loved the jigs

The final tally of 85 striped marlin in 4 days

It was another awesome trip with pretty good weather on the bank with around 10-15 knots and 10 knots on the last couple days
As we made our way back we had a few interruptions from mahi mahi and also released another striped marlin

in total we finished up with
2 marlin on stickbait
1 on a live bait
and 84 on Bonze Light gauge hooks

Couple interesting things from this trip was that we found the numbers of pack attacks we had was down and we caught a lot of singles. This allowed us to catch them quicker and also helped with our hook up rate been able to focus on a single fish
Other things like we pitch live baits and had livebaits out while fighting multiple fish yet they were only eaten twice!!!
They would just refuse to eat them and swim right past them to have a crack at a lure doing around 2 knots Confused

Its always an amazing trip and we have never had the bank be the same and this trip was no different. It took us time to find them and was very different to our other 3 trips which i guess is good as it made us search more and each time we learn a bit more

Fishing to die for. Hard to believe I was the first one to hit like.
Great photos. Best for me was the 2 marlin jumping at the same time.

Yeah man we use trebles, we tried singles but they didnt work very well so went back to trebles and they seem to work
for leader we run 5 meters of 170-200lb varivas shock leader to a swivel then 1.5m of 300lb to the lure

caught 7 so far on this system but we still trying new ways

Yeah mate we have run light gauge on all 4 trips we have done apart from day 1 on trip 1 which after raising around 50+ fish and only catching 4 fish we switched over and never looked back
