just back from a short stint at the southcoast. Motor crapped itself just after leaving the ramp, so after 2h of bickering in the bay with cowling off and theories galore, we decided to limp to an easily accessible spot where we have a good chance of a feed as well as a good chance to retrieve the boat in case the motor spits it’s guts out.
not very fishy, but we got a handful of bugs and paua. Although the wind was up the vis was reasonable for Wellies and 14 degrees still, so not too bad. Beats a day on the couch.

what else to do on such a lovely winter day than going for a dive? Never got this wet in my dinghy before when checking out Makara’s finest. Vis was quite nice, better than topside… Came back with the usual suspects, bugs and slugs. I suspect the vis is going to stay good for a couple of days, but bring a thermos with plenty of hot water (and soup?).

Got out on Sunday south of Mana for a few hours with a veteran and a newbie in tow. Viz was surprisingly good given the heavy rain last week but the temperature is definitely getting down.

First spot towards boom rock was dead around 70% of the rock but had huge amounts of tarakihi and around 10 big blue moki that only stuck around for one dive. The veteran took a goatfish and a few tarakihi and I picked up a cray off the same rock then moved around the corner to the next spot.

The newbie was in there quickly picking up a snapper(red moki) and a good sized butterfly pearch, he was fizzing on how much better than Point Howard it was.
The Veteran pick up a good dory on his first dive and I shot a blue moki and another couple of tarakihi.

Great day of winter diving in about 13 degrees.
Go hard or die trying.

Great to be back in the water yesterday, after a few months off. Vis just outside Lyall Bay was 4-5m. A little choppy out wide in the wind. Primo!

nice one - we’ve checked out shark’s tooth, first time in a year. Dive was mint, prob 8m vis on the inside, but hard work on the fish. Bring on summer!

THE WAREHOU ARE BACK!

If you like targeting these fish they are back out Kapiti in good numbers AND at some points they could have been shot from the surface.

May see some of you out there this weekend,

just in case you need an update for the southcoast. The Island Bay Marine Education Center has revived their underwater camera - not a livestream, but the next best thing:

today looks tasty as (note Frankie the Paua in the background. Great entertainment to watch her (him?) munching along)

Beautiful vis on the South Coast today, up to 10m and clear. Stoked to catch a couple of crayfish, koheru (two with one shot!) paua and butterfish.

Crippy for president - hou are still about! Popped one on the very last drop after an uneventful but outstanding beauty of a day topside and below. 8m vis, lots of crays in the shallows, but fish were a tad shy. Get out there! Southcoast is firing too

Out there @e.m.p! nice work on the hou.

Boys got some hou out Makara this morning, 5m vis apparently.
Kings are starting to show up out Kapiti but mainly out deep. Water was 17.5 and vis 15m ish out the island last weekend.

vis was quite poor at boulder bank on Saturday, but lots of people out there and seems like someone shot a boarie. Not the first up there, but looks like they're becoming more common.
Just curious who owns/uses the blue centre console RIB? Bummer that their boat sticks out like a sore thumb, 'cause you fellas know where the fish are (and may or may not attract a following)

Makara 19degrees water ystd, up to 8m ish vis...kinda fishy ...lost another good snap due to gut shot ...crucial to pick the right spot with bit of current! ...wasted more than 2 hours on a promising spot where were plenty snapper last week(with current then but not ystd) ...changed spot for the last 30min diving and boom..second drop JD, then a good snapper and saw another bigger one, followed by another one(gut shot and lost just before grabbing)...amazing sun set as a bonus!
