The river had a nice green tinge and was nice and full. Day was startlingly clear but frosty - perfect conditions. Before dawn Canopus looked more like a planet than a star, burning over the south western horizon.
Fished the middle pools while around 10-12 rods passed me heading up stream (school holidays). The fish were present in one and twos in most pools. Not the big runs that really indicate things are firing but enough to keep things interesting.
Five fish hooked, two self released (one after heading downstream through a log jam), two returned - one a small fresh maiden hen and a coloured 4 lb Jack, one taken home for the smoker - another slightly coloured 3lb Jack.
No CZ nymphing but a good high stick was used to combat some of the heavier flows mid stream where surface mending didn't cut it. First fish hooked right on dawn was on a pink glowbug under a couple of split shot and 2 meters of 8lb braid/30cm 6lb flouro combo. Rio flyline felt a bit sticky through the guides. Probably more my technique but definitley preferred the old Whitewater platinum for sheer casting power. Maybe the new Rio grande would be better.
Must be getting older, by midday definitely feeling like a bit of sit down fishing was in order.
