I’ve always for years tied my jigheads on with the lefty loop, but lately I’ve been trying mustard fastach clips. First tied them on with a uni knot which worked ok but now I tie the clips on with the lefty loop and get a lot more action. What knots are you guys using?

Interesting question.
I used to use the Lefty/Rapala, but switched to clips (NOT Genie, either TenMouth or Mustad) for 2 reasons: 1. knot failure on the Lefty due to fish teeth/wear and therefore 2. not having to keep re-tying with changes of jigheads or to stop potential breakages due to wear, thus shortening the leader more rapidly and eventually having to re-tie the FG joining knot as well.

I like the way the Mustad, in particular, adds a bit of extra protection from fish teeth.

I thought the clip was supposed to replicate the movement of a loop knot to some degree, but never thought about tying a loop knot to the clip as well. I just use a Uni.

Uni knot. Have been using the Mustad Fastach for a while now and really like them - had never considered using a loop knot too but will try next time out

I use the Mustad Fastach also. I tie it on with a uni. The clip allows the lure to work effectively IMO

uni, the clip allows the lure or jighead action so no need for lefty imo

No loose bits between the lure and the line so everything possible is felt directly by me is my personal preference, so a uni to the lure. I have seen 20lb+ snapper fish of lifetime flap and swim away (more than one occasion when a charter captain) due to a clip un clipping, but then again I didn't tie their clips on..so yeah whatever works but I rely on a uni for just about everything.

The reason I said "NOT a Genie clip" is that I have had two failures on great fish (not 20lbers, thank god, but fish that were really good sized for me).
1. when the Uni slipped through a gap in the loop you tie the knot to - the fish made a last-second lunge at an awkward angle. I examined the packet and several of the clips had enough of a gap for 16lb fluoro to slip through.
2. when a fish, which had been hooked on an inchiku jig, made an awkward lunge at the net and the jig's attachment loop slipped up and out of the connection on the Genie. Never thought that could happen, but it did.

I like the fact that the Fastach has a stand alone loop for the knot.

X2 I don't like the look or weight of all that hardware above the jighead. I pull the uni up tight to set the knot then ease it back to create a small loop for the head to move freely - it tightens when the weight of a fish comes on.

You could do the same using a uni to your clip, but I doubt loosening it would make any difference to the lures performance.

You guys are correct.
I have lost my trace through the gap in the genie clip (twice) now I tighten them in the vice after purchase.
I have lost fish with the jig head out of the clip a couple of times also..
BUT, I like to unclip my jig and clip the genie on the hook keeper and I like the simplicity so I stick with them as a preference.
The above losses are out of hundreds of fish caught.
The other day my wife caught a little snapper on the genie clip!!! Got a bit of it's lip skin on there, pretty funny.
I use a polomar sp? knot.

As for clips, I used to be a purist and attach leader directly to lure, but clips do make life a lot easier when fishing from a kayak or jetski.

I use this kind of swivel connector. They come in very small sizes which are unobtrusive and more than strong enough for softbait gear. I haven't had one fail and that's over 100s of fish in the last few years. Actually, not quite true, one did spring open - I think the snapper bit down on it, but the fish stayed on.

Likewise have seen the knot nearly slip through the eye loop on a Genie clip. I also believe this is a problem on the various Genie look alike clips that came to market a few years back - and was less/no problem with the original Genie's. Having said that I will never use them again.

The Fastach clip is great - gives the jighead movement, is very secure and means I'm not having to retie a Lefty's loop every time I want to try a different sized jighead.

Yep dont like genie clips either, same thing leader slipping through the gap. That why I just went to the leftys only.

I manly fish around whangaparaoa so can be in close one minute then out to tiri the next. I find with the clip I can quickly change the weight to make sure the bait is hard on the bottom and i like plenty of action in the bait.

Agree, Dan. I got two packets from Greg at Go Fish and they have gone well. I just find that sometimes with wet, cold, hands I just cannot get them open. Probably poor technique on my part, combined with having an office worker's hands, not a tough tradie!!

So particularly last winter I used the Fastach.

My hands get wrinkly on the kayak Lester, small pliers help. Never had one slip and they have survived battles with some mean Kingies.

I think they are slightly better on mirco jigs but go well on Atomic jigheads Greg does too.
