Flounder, Yellow Eyed Mullet

So last weekend I went up to an area for a look around that holds flounder and plenty of yellow eyed mullet, threw a few flys around more of a casting practice session than anything. But it got me a bit steamed up seeing fishing tailing around in the shallows (albit small buggers)

I've read through a heap of old posts the past few nights and gleaned a heap of information about times of year, flies, time of day etc, however 1 piece of info has escaped me.

What is the best size rod weight for this #4 or #6? or?????
My #9 and #10 weight rods are complete overkill for this.

Any other recommendation on line and best leader size would be appreciated.

BTW - this fly fishing addiction is bad!!!!, go to bed thinking about fly fishing, wake up thinking about fly fishing.

Standby to be flooded with the next series of questions when I start tying :-)

It really depends what else you use the lighter rod weights for. If you want a rod that will be good for kahawai as well then go with a six. You could catch flounder and yelloweye mullet on a zero weight but I find anything lighter than a five weight becomes a little bit impractical in the salt.

I did actually pick up on that point from the early posts, hence why I specified yellow eyed mullet (sprats) as I know a few of you have gone crazzzzy of grey mullet 😀

Grey mullet are great for casting practice. The few I have caught have always been in those very active groups of fish that are milling about on the surface and almost look like they're chasing each other around. This gives you a very active and fast moving target to cast too. Plenty of direction changes and delicate presentations required. A stripping basket is almost essential. It's great fun. Although it can get frustrating!
