I'm thinking I will sand off the patchy deteriorating Nyalic clear coat on my Surtees. Not the paint but just the clear parts.

Anyone got any experience sanding back Aluminium? Tips? Wondering what Grit I should end up on and if it really matters other than cosmetic.

Keen to know if I'm heading in the right direction here!

I believe acetone will take it right off. Ring John Fielding at Nyalic NZ - he is quite helpful.
I redid mine 2 years ago. My panelbeater used an orbital sander and paint stripping wheel. I didn't opt for Nyalic the second time around, I just went with etch primer and 4 x coats of 2 pot enamel (this was down to cost mainly)

Toluene works better than acetone that's if you can get it.

You can also use in 2 stroke & 4 stroke motors including your car its about 40% cheaper than petrol. Honda won the formula 1 racing in 1980 using Toluene fuel

I woyuld be very careful using any heat
Heat causes localised expansion in a panel, that then causes the panel to buckle, also possible stress on welds.
Alloy has a very big expansion coefficient..

Use sanding paper made by Sirdex you can by it at the fiber glass shop .i would start off by using P 180 then work your way down using with P 280then P 400 and finer this way you wont see any sanding line when you respray.
