Hi im new to whangarei area n new to spearfishing i hv the gears n was wondering if anyone knows a good land based spot for me to shoot my first snapper or kingy this time of year thanx for reading my post

I don’t do what you do exactly, but a mixture of rod/line fishing and SCUBA diving from boats. I think the Tutukaka area would be the best option. Otherwise, you could try around Smugglers. Scallop season starts soon and there are a few good spots in the harbour that can be reached from shore.

Tutukaka is a good place to start, relatively shallow. Less chance of seeing any of the razor tooth family. As MightyBoosh has said smugglers also has a high chance of both snapper and kingfish but you do have to be aware of the bronzies. Although they aren't anywhere near as dangerous as the boats zipping in and around the harbour entrance.
