Am finding lately an upside to the hordes of tiny snapper filling the gulf at present is there almost a similar number of John Dorys eagerly seeking a freebie meal.
Ok so maybe not the most handsome of fish or the fiercest of fighters but would have to be right up there amongst the best eating table fish.
Scored 9 on trip out last week & we managed another couple yesterday with the results from the former being an unprecedented PB.
As most would know they are mostly caught by rec fishos when they swallow head first a hooked fish which they cannot then disgorge.
Particularly noticeable is the superb condition of the JDs with each fish proving to be too much of a meal for two, as they are so fat. As most will know a JD provides two boneless fillets which in turn divide into three sections by slicing along clearly defined lines. The two uneaten, left over bits shown in the pic were the thinner bottom sections, nevertheless were over 25 mm thick.
As is shown in the middle pic the swallowed fish which is usually a snapper that can sometimes be "surgically" removed alive, then unhooked to swim away.
Imagine the tale he can tell his mates on their return such as ... "Guess what happened to me today ?" ... "First of all I was minding my own business, nibbling on a tasty tit bit when I felt a sharp thing in my mouth after which I was swallowed by a big ugly looking fish, where upon we were both hauled up to the surface only to be netted into a boat by an even uglier human, cut free then tossed back into the water & here I am !"
When you cry, feel pain or sadness, no one notices your sorrow .... BUT
fart just ONE time !!!!!!!!!!!
