Our next Raising the Bar seminar is scheduled for Wed 2 May at 7:00 pm here at the marine Rescue Centre.

These informative seminars are presented by specialists in the following areas:
  • Trip planning
  • Vessel preperation
  • Communication protocols
  • Local area knowledge
These seminars are NOT designed to provide inexperienced boaties with all they need to know to start tackling bars but for those with the experience or who are currently crossing it, the information here and the opportunity to ask questions is a valuable opportunity.

There's no cost to attend - a donation would be nice but registration is required. More information and the ability to book is available here

This will be well worth attending. It's easy to cross a bar in good conditions and think you've nailed but  you need to go armed with some knowledge on what to when  things don't go so well.

Just another note:
here at the marine Rescue Centre.
It is not obvious just where the MRC is.. including on the web site.
And considering this is the Manukau Bar (and  Raglin/Kawhia) TBA)
Its not until one regist for the evening it shows...

When - Wednesday 2 May 2018 - start at 7:00 pm finish by approx. 8:30 pm
Where - Auckland Marine Rescue Centre, 3 Solent Street, Mechanics Bay Auckland. Parking on Tamaki Drive.
Cost - Free entry
Please complete a registration form for everyone attending.

Couple other thoughts/ considerations...
1/ That is one hell of a haul (1hr plus each way in a straight run thru) from down Raglin/ Waiuku way to Mechanics Bay in Auckland....
For a 90 to 120 min seminar.
Espec for a local population (Puke/ Waiuku way) that the 1st thing they mention is " never get further than Papakura unless very desperate..." (Traffic)
2/ Waikato Bar no seminar? it is well used as a alternative to a quick entry to the west coast open water rather than the long haul up from Te Torro.

If some members from down Waiuku way want to get up to around Takanini/ Manurewa.. park vehicle at our home here.. then car pool into town.. Have the 7 seater big horn.. or one of your vehicles.
Post/ PM

Thanks for this.

We have and will continue to run these seminars anywhere viable. The region regularly delivers bar days in Raglan (one was scheduled for today but filled up a few weeks ago) and Kawhia. We have run seminars in Tuakau, Papakura, New Lynn and tried to run one earlier this year in Pukekohoe.

To respect the time our volunteers from the Communications group and the wet units are providing to make these possible, we need reasonable numbers. We are happy to talk to any club with a suitable venue and interested members about running one on site. In the meantime the Marine Rescue Centre seems like a fairly central location as people from all over Auckland are now "heading west".

We do include the Waikato Bar as well if people attending are interested which is becoming more common now.

Hope that helps.
