Hi guys I've got a spare week in New Zealand from about the 23rd Jan until 30 Jan.  I'm flying in from the UK 22nd but suspect the first day or two to be a bit of a write-off.  On 30th I'm meeting up with folk and have a couple of days booked with Lucas Allen and a few days guided and self-guide trout fishing so have that covered.  looking for some ideas where to go to mainly self-guide saltwater fly fishing.  I've done a reasonable amount in the UK but never in your neck of the woods.  Would value your suggestions on

a Where to base myself.  I will be in Auckland but am happy to fly or drive anywhere.  Am happy to get a guide for a day or two but can't afford one for longer really, happy to rent a boat if that makes fishing more accesible.

b. Flies and tactics, assuming clouser deceiver poppers will be my mainstay colours similar to elsewhere?  Any local must have patterns

c.  Any other suggestions or helpful tips.

Ideally, want to catch a kingfish like to catch some kahawai too if that's possible, but really not a species snob!

My initial thoughts were coromandel, golden bay or bay of islands but I am flexible. I fancy basing myself in one area to get a feel for it rather than trying to hit all the hotspots for a day at a time  Any help greatly appreciated

Matto could be your best option:

There are landbased options out at Waiheke too, which I'm sure Matt could help you with.

Otherwise, with that tight schedule, I'd probably park myself on Meola Reef and/or have a west coast option (Whatipu) as a back up. The reality is that you don't have a lot of time. Meola can produce at that time of the year and is not heavily fished from the shore because of the difficulty in walking out there. If you're fit and have good hiking boots it will give you plenty of options. Watch the tide and currents though. It could be an easy place to die. Research some of the old threads on this board for more info.

I could take you out on my jetski if you're interested, work and weather dependent. I like good conditions for fishing from the ski.

I'm based in Whangarei. If we find work-ups, kahawai and trevally won't be a problem, with a good chance of a kingfish. Snapper from the shallows would be an option too. I catch them on soft baits, so a fly should work well.

That looks awesome, would love a go at it, not a lot of space to chuck a fly with 2 on board but happy to give it a go equally happy to play with softies for a day

I think the fly rod could work, if that's your thing, but a spinning rod for softies and jigs would be easier for sure. Send me a message with a date closer to the time. As I say, it's a very weather-dependent exercise. Jetski is a safe vessel, but a wet ride if more than a small chop.
