Hi all, new member here with plans to travel to Wellington next week intending to go for a quick dive during cray season. I will also be in the South island for a short period of time.
Hoping to luck out.. possibly be shown (in the way of Google maps pin drops) some suitable spots for a shore dive
Just travelling with a 5mm suit, mask and fins - will purchase a weight belt and arrange all licensing once I arrive
Apologies if I'm doing this forum thing wrong!

Welcome 4WD. Firstly there is no recreational cray fishing season in NZ, you can take 6 crays per person per day year round. There is no requirement for a recreational licence either. Recreational rules and size limits can be found here: mpi.govt.nz
I assume you will be free diving, I will let the Wellington locals respond re: likely spots.

The beauty of Wellington's coast is if one's stuffed the other usually works. The further you are from the entry point the more likely you'll see crays. Makara (westcoast) is a good start, park your car and walk for a bit…
