Thu word is in the fish retail industry,  its hard to get full orders of snapper KY/ mullet on to the shelves. Apparently as the number of outlets/ supermarkets and population increase and quota hasnt.. which I believe in many cases has been filled, with next yrs quota coming out end of the month.. so less com fishing in the outer gulf .. more good fish getting to spawning grounds ???
IE any retail outlets starting to fill the gap with sea perch as snapper alternatives .. so if seeing unusual species on the shelves right now that could be right...also some unusual dory species so have been told.

And if the coms are not out in the outter gulf as the larger breeding snaps coming in could be a bumper rec fishing season.
And with more breeders in spawning grounds , could result in another bumper season in 5 yrs. 5yrs ago was also a good season.

Be interesting what effect the resent MPI under the microscope, coms cameras  etc has had on the industry...few more minority cowboy operators having to tow the line now?  maybe filling quota earlier than normal???

If the above is correct then may mean possible alternative coms restrictions..with out need to change quota, rather than not fishing late winter thru mid spring due to full quota because filled... rest coms fishing sept/ Oct periods, allow more breeders in to spawn. This would also take rec pressure off the coms with better spring summer fishing???

In saying that , fully expect quota to now increase, not because of possible more fish, but simply because cant fill export and local retail demand...which is how our fisheries got into the state they have been for the last 40/50 yrs

Was in N.W 2-3 months back and commented on why often no snapper or gurnard. Comment from the man behind the counter was they ordered them daily but often these days order was not always able to be filled. Not sure why.
And when they do have gurnard the fillets are so small.
