The beauty of it is that it will send your position and a distress alert to other VHFs in the area with DSC equipped radios - great for kayakers in my opinion.

Doesn't that need a NEMA connection to the plotter to obtain position information?
No sure how you achieve this with a handheld radio.

I have the IP68 rated 6W uniden which floats and has GPS readout and an integrate strobe.

Does it have a distress button as well?

I am surprised that DSC Distress calling is not encouraged in NZ. In fact, very few people even know what it is and/or how it works. The beauty of it is that it will send your position and a distress alert to other VHFs in the area with DSC equipped radios - great for kayakers in my opinion.

It does as does my fixed mount.

But which MMSI when using a hand-held on two vessel with different call signs?

I guess I could use the kayak MMSI for the handheld and note on the information sheet that it's also back up for the boats MMSI.

Some VHFs (handheld or fixed) have built in GPS.
