Hi, the trouble is if you have a good book etc you don't want to part with it.
Have a look out for Saltwater Fly Patterns

I've bought some from here, free shipping to NZ.

Essential Saltwater Flies was good, as it has a lot of info about equipment, techniques and how to fish the fly's as well as fly patterns.

i've just been reading Making Better Flies by Lou Tabory, which I got out of the library in Auckland.
It's an excellent book - rather than just patterns (though there is that stuff), there's excellent analysis fly design, movement, the latest materials, colours in the water versus out, etc.
The target fish species, and baitfish the flies imitate, are obviously US-centric, but the information would be transferable for our waters.

It was published this year, and I think that's important. It's up to date with synthetic materials which you can also find online. The problem with older books is that the materials used don't reflect what's available now. anyway, something to consider.

Another thing i'd recommend is keeping an eye out for copies of the Aussie magazine Flylife. You should be able to find some second hand. Some great salt water patterns and advice in every issue, but it also has trout stuff.

You do make a good point about the newer books being up to date with newer materials etc. but the older books are still worth their weight in gold.

I've got one of the original ring bound booklets put out by Lefty Kreh that is a compilation of all the successful patterns of the day....and that's going back a few years.

Fundamentally not much has really changed in the way flies are tied over the years. Some of the materials have improved to last longer on those toothy speedsters, but not much else in my opinion.

The Flashy Profile was a revelation in terms of synthetic genius especially for billfish and big pelagics.

Essentially a Clouser is still a Clouser whether it be bucktail or the newer synthetics that are often used.
Same as a Deceiver which really is the skeleton for most salt water patterns used today.

This goes across the full spectrum of patterns whether it's on the flats or offshore.
