depends what you're after. A purpose built roller is better than a pimped up rail gun with a roller head. Then wooden better than alu, then any over 100 not justifiably better than a standard 120.
If you want a manouverable short gun with lots of punch, a roller is the ticket. Any other situation works with a standard setup too
disclaimer: I haven't tried a roller, so not speaking from personal experience. Just pasing on what I read

OK, thanks. Do you think a 100cm roller gun would be OK for inshore NZ stuff. Snapper and the odd kingie etc.

Yes, I'd think so. I was pretty close on pulling the trigger on exactly this – a 100 wooden roller. Copped out when I figured the shipping cost, though.

a standard 100 tube gun with a single 16mm rubber is good enough for snapper and the odd king. from what I've heard some guys like them in blue water shooting from further away and easier to turn. close up they are apparently inaccurate, which is where you should be pulling the trigger.
I've seen a ****load of roller 'converted' guns come up for sale privately, which would suggest they aren't that successful.

Not wishing to be a killjoy, or question anyones (secondhand) knowledge but is there someone who actually owns and uses a roller regularly got a comment?

I think if set up correctly they're fantastic, and if not they're a friggin pain. I took an untested 130 roller to Tonga. Missed 50% of my shots, and promptly turned it back in to a standard double rubber setup. It needs more tinkering, but ultimately I'm not convinced it'll do much more than what it'll do now. I'll keep trying though.

Anyone want to buy a trusty old ra 120 caranax converted to an MVD roller??

Like herb experienced I was missing about half my longer range shots (anything over 2m range).
Would probably have been great if I had the time and patience to tune it up as the power, recoil and size was a good change even though I did find it hard to load.
I suspect there was some spear knocking or even an issue with the line release in my old handle as it was shooting consistently at a fixed range but vertically it was a lottery at different ranges. Different spears and a bit of fiddling but nah.

So a lot more commitment perhaps required on my behalf but i've gone back for a 110 ra and it just works fine for the diving I do. I had a go and have only lost 10cm of manhood in the process.

Cheers
