Hi guys,

Iv noticed this year that yellowtail kingfish have moved further down the South Island and are being found in the harbour and tidal areas around Christchurch. I was wondering if there has been sittings of kingi's in the Otago - Dunedin area while your surfcasting, diving, game fishing and etc?

I know there is plenty of baitfish (mullet, kahawai, piper, flounder) around Dunedin so I don't see why not, other then water temp.

Any help would be great thanks.
Sam.

Hi Sam  I know its awhile since you put up this post but I have just seen it .
Anyhow in Jan 2015  while trolling a silver lure for an Otago Harbour salmon I landed a small  (around 60 cm ) yellow tail  Kingfish  we also pulled in a few kahawai,  The water temp was around 15deg  a lot warmer than other years . there was another one caught a few days earlier and put in the local paper ODT
 Cheers Bill

Ps Meant to say I was at the Otago Harbour entrance  by the mole

Hi,
Plenty of Kingies between Moeraki and Taieri Mouth last summer.
Go out of Taiaroa Heads and head toward Matanaka. Look for large clumps of drifting kelp and cast a popper around them.
A live Kahawai or Yellow Eyed Mullet under a balloon works too as does jigging if you know for sure the fish are where you are. Some of the fish out here are around 8kg to 10 kg. Some really big ones have turned up at the reefs near Moeraki and Taieri Mouth. January to end of March is the best time. Saw one at Danger Reef in February that would have gone 25kg +.
