This time last year when the hot sticky weather hit we were plagued by flies & the population seemed to double day by day. This of course is not uncommon when fishos clean their catch at home despite taking
all precautions to minimise any mess they seem to arrive in their droves.

This year we invested in some disposable fly catcher bags from Fly Busters for approx. $10 ea.

Below is the first one we hung about 2 1/2 weeks ago, however when I checked on it this evening the flies are still fighting to get in but their efforts are proving futile as there is no room for any more & kinda like at a womens' shoe sale.

Simply need to add some water initially hang it somewhere out of the wind but warm as possible & preferably close to the ground so as the attractant rises.

Admittedly after a couple of days it starts to pong a bit but imo is a small price to pay in order to be almost fly free & can easily shift it out of range if having a barbie or eating outside.

Wow that's pretty impressive.

Saw a couple of flies in the lounge yesterday and had to swat them. Something like this could be worthwhile if any more turn up

Keen to know where you get them as well.

We're just as bad as last year and we've moved 8kms away!

Bunnings Warehouse had them a few days ago.  Nearly bought some myself but for some unknown reason I passed them by.  I'll be going back to Bunnings, probably on Monday - and if still in stock will grab a few because we are absolutely plagued by flies again this year.  I reckon they are breeding in the mangroves a few hundred metres away...

We purchased ours from 'Flybusters" in Ellice Rd. Glenfield & seem to remember they were no. 42 b, however think they have franchises all over NZ. but could be wrong on that.

Note :- they are NOT suitable for hanging inside unless of course you have lost your sense of smell. To prevent the flies coming indoors we sprayed the doorways & window sills with another product they sell
which lasts for months with enough for 3 or 4 applications, but more as a repellent then instead of coming inside, they tend to head for the catcher.

Grant have often wondered if the mangroves provide an ideal breeding ground for the flies as we are only about 150 mtrs away from them as well.

Thanks
We're in Farmland too so plenty room to place stinky items. Off to Bunnings it is then.
We use Ripcord to spray around house. When blow fly's come inside all they want to do is get out and if they can't it's kaka for them. Problem is though in a bad season is cleaning the 100000000's off the window sills daily. Be nice to distract them to another location.
Normal house fly's don't contact the ripcord the same and survive just fine.
BTW what did you do with the bag full?

Good question as it is still hanging there & am wondering how best to dispose of it. One option being considered is to take it out to a street drain then puncture the bag to empty the contents down the drain then tie the catcher up tightly in a couple of strong plastic bags to put in the rubbish sack.

After living on a rural property up until about 5 yrs ago I well know what you mean about blowflies as reckon it is all the animal poo that attracts them to breed.

Cannot say I have noticed any blowies in the trap however don't seem get to get them much if at all but if they were, can see no reason they would not enter the trap.

After putting the water in the trap to activate the attractant then seems to take a couple of days or more before it becomes effective so best to get one hung asap.

As mentioned prime spots to hang them seem to be somewhere warm out of the wind & close to the ground to maximise the spread of attractant.
