Heaps of skippies in close around te kaha today.. Finding a ledge to land on was another matter though, cray pots everywhere!

With so many reports of marlin in close, it could really happen this year - if the people are out putting in the time :)
A king on the bricks is worth 5 in a boat.

Well we didn't end up having a crack at the LBg Marlin, although conditions were pretty good down at Te Kaha/East cape. First day we launched at Te Kaha and had planned to fish the ledges south of there but each one was thick with cray pots. Real shame as the ledges looked great.
We then went north towards Waikawa point and found heaps of skippies in close, I don't have a sounder but depth was probably 30-50 metres judging from the charts, and less than 500 metres from shore. Caught a few for fresh bait, good fun on light tackle. With petrol running low we went back to our accommodation and refuelled ourselves and the boat and drove up to Waihau.
Plenty of life in water at Waihau with skippies feeding and the odd flying fish which was pretty cool to see.
We found a ledge on the western side of Runnaway to fish for the arvo but it didn't produce much.
Day 2 we just did a lazy walk in at Waikawa where Callum got a small but legal king on the snapper gear that we kept as it was gut hooked.
Day 3 conditions were mint and we launched at Waihau bay and shot across to the rocks off the end of Cape Runnaway.
There was the odd cray pot out off Runnaway there which would make it tough for anyone doing a serious lbg marlin mish, but as we were targeting kings and snaps it was sweet as.
We landed 4 kings for the day, mostly in the 8-9kg variety with one over 18kgs one a livie right at the end of the day. Heaps of small snapper around in the berley but nothing decent. Also had a pair of bronzies show up, one much bigger than the other which is something I haven't seen before.
Day 4 we fished a ledge past Runnaway, quite a few small kings around again but no big boys, although Callum did hook something on a snapper bait which almost spooled him.
There's trip pics up on the nz lbg club facebook page

dang it... no marlin this time. But plenty of action out on the water.

Discovered some great new spots with heaps of potential for setting up for a go at game fish from the bricks... will be back there next year!
here fishy, fishy fishy.....
