Hello people of the world wide web.
I have looked at so many combos I really don't know what to buy.

What I'm looking for is a new rod reel setup that, I can chuck a live or dead bait or a stickbait maybe.

Since I'm heading up to the top of the south where I hear there's a good chance of Kingfish, my wee blue cod setup isn't really going to cut the mustard.

I've looked at the shimano thunnus 8000 and quite like that. But if I went for a 12000 could I use that for a groper on a shorter rod?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated thanks

It really depends on which part of the top-of-the-south you're heading to, will you be heading for D'Urville, Nelson, Golden Bay or the Sounds?

If you were looking to fish D'Urville I would probably be more inclined to go with a Jig combo, especially if you wanted to chase Groper as well. If you really were wanting to cast some stickbaits around, I would steer away from the baitrunner options, they are heavier, bulkier and generally lack the drag performance you need for this kind of fishing

There are some great entry level to mid range stickbait combos around at the moment that would be much more suited for what you're looking for, and the reels that come with these would be much better for chasing groper if you were to swap rods. The Okuma Azores range is a wicked new option this season at roughly $400 for the combo, 20kg of smooth drag, and a really nice stickbait rod to match.

Where are you based in the South Island?

Hi ssmanukau, I'm heading over the golden bay side, but I live down in te anau and thought if I splashed out a good amount of money once I might have a setup that I could chase snapper kingfish up there and maybe it would come in handy on the odd groper hole down here. But maybe thats asking a bit much

Thought I would resurrect this thread; I'm after a jigging rod/reel to have a crack at the Durville kingis, would also like to use it for groper. What combo would you guys suggest?

Spin or overhead? What's your budget?

If you want to use it for Groper you're going to need decent capacity and the rod will need to be able to handle big jigs in the 500g kinda territory if you want a chance of staying vertical in 250+m.

Spin, Saragosa 20000 on a Backbone Elite 400g would be a reasonable starting point.

Overhead is trickier, Talica 12 (single or 2-speed) or a Okuma Makaira 16 perhaps.
Okuma has a Metaloid rod coming out fairly soon that would fit the bill, or again the Backbone Elite 400g, sky is the limit on rods though with some really nice options like a Jigstar Twisted Sista (the heavy one, PE5-8 I think?) or something from Synit or Jigging Master filling out the top end of the market.

Thanks man. I'm flexible with regard to spin vs overhead, open to suggestions.

As for the budget, I was thinking maybe $900-$1000 should get me something decent. I don't need top of the range type stuff as I'm not lucky enough to target the big fish regularly, mostly snapper and cod in and around the sounds for me.

I was in hunting and fishing yesterday, they had a torium overhead reel that looked the business, they were waiting on a delivery of jig rods to partner it with. That was around $900.

You can pick up the Torium 16A, which is the only one narrow enough to seriously jig with, on a Backbone Elite rod for $449:

Add maybe $100-$120 for some good braid and you're still only at $549 or so, dunno where the extra $350 is coming from at H&F as their pricing is usually pretty reasonable.

The Backbone is a bit of a broomhandle but it's also very tough as far as these rods go, a lot of the high end graphite ones are incredible rods but easily damaged.

If you're spending $900-$1000.... that would comfortably get you into something like a Trinidad 16NA on a decent rod, or a Talica... its into the territory where if you show some restraint on the rod (say, CD Rods Nano Fast Jig) you'll be able to get into one of the specialist jigging reels like a Maxel, JM or Accurate.

I mean I like the Torium, it's a nice reel for the price, but it's not exactly designed for this type of fishing.

Not mine but I spotted this on trademe, looks like good set. My mate has the same rod, real nice to jig with.

Thanks guys. I had a look at marine deals, they have a talica 16 with a terez rod that looks pretty interesting.

The one on trademe looks pretty good too but I'd prefer a new setup.

The rod is too long and soft for mechanical jigging kings. You'll never find a serious jig stick more than 6ft, most are around the 5ft mark and have a very long butt with the reel seat well up the rod; the actual working length of the rod tends to be just over a meter. They might call that a jig rod but it's more for the american style of "jigging" which is very different from what's practised here.

Also the Talica 16 is the same reel as the 12 only wider; no reason you can't jig with it but believe me when I say you want the narrowest reel that will give you the capacity you need, when you're flailing around like a seagull that's been hit by a car trying to entice a hit from a Kingi you don't want to be worrying about line-lay.

Actually I messed up; just got home and had a look at the quote I got from hunting and fishing. It's a Trinidad 16na with a t-curve jig rod 400 gram for $900. Looking around maybe that's not such a bad price.

If I'm going to look like a dick then I don't want to make it worse with gear that craps out at the worst possible moment!
