The Broome bilfish classic just concluded here, with 571 Sailfish raised, 410 strikes, 303 Hooked and 196 tagged. Marlin results where 63 raised, 33 strikes,23 hooked and 12 tagged. All fishing was with dead baits,  so tease and switch  from the 78 anglers. Not bad results for 5 days fishing.

The all girl team where lucky after hitting a whale returning back one arvo during the comp, hudge numbers of Humpback whales inshore at the moment...

23 marlin hooked and 12 tagged! Does that seem low conversion rate for dead bait fishing?

The numbers hooked and tagged.... Does that mean of the 23 hooked twelve were tagged and the rest dropped or were they weighed?
Sounds like good fishing !
Cheers,

Catch and release comp only RB, so those fish hooked but not tagged escaped :) which is not surprising considering just how acrobatic the sails and small  black marlin are.

Would most of them be running small circles? I haven't dealt with many sails or small black.... actually none haha. Id hope for a better conversion rate here on the stripes or is about 50% the norm?

All circle hooks is my understanding for the comp. About the same size as I would use for snapper straylining, 60lb fluro leader.
Sorry I cant comment on the usual conversion rate, so far for me this season  hooked 10 and landed 9 this year on a mix of live and dead pitch baits. Raised lots more though that have shyed off.....
