We spent a few days at the Turangi Camping Ground last year , family trip in caravan but I noted the little single cabins they rent out. Remains of the hydro scheme days.
Very basic but heating and a bed , not far from TV room and Kitchen , was $40 per head from memory.
Virtually have the place to yourself outside holidays.

My personal favourite is by far and away Tongariro River Motel -
Ph: 0800 1TROUT.         http://www.tongarirorivermotel.co.nz/
It is run by Ross and Pip Baker, they are excellent people and really make you feel welcome.

They are especially helpful to fisherpeople. Ross is a keen fisherman and will give you plenty of tips on what's working, but only if you ask for them, he won't force it on you at all.

Costs will be more than if you stayed at the Cabins on your own but if you are going down there with a mate or two then the Motel becomes a much better price, and a lot more comfortable.

Cheers
Duncan

Have stayed at the Creel Lodge and TRM. TRM definitely better if you're on a budget. I also use baches from Book a bach. Can usually get something for 90 bucks a night outside of holidays.
