Trying to balance my gear up a bit, and while my surfcaster has a casting weight stamped on the side, my 8' 'general' combo rod doesn't, only a line rating.

What weight would you suggest as 'casting weight' if the line rating is 4 - 8kg?

It's a bit hard to say but it's something you will pick up by the 'feel' of the rod as you cast. Try a gentle lob at first using say a one ounce sinker. Don't overpower the rod by laying into it really hard, it's not designed for really long distances. You will feel if the weight is too light and likewise you will feel if the weight is too heavy. Start with one ounce, try a two and a three and you will see what I mean.

Agree that it's hard to say. In terms of rod breakage, field and stream did a test.

Roughly a 500:1 ratio between recommended casting weight and rod breakage, so you will really have to wind on the g's to break a rod from a cast.

My 6-10kg rodworks offshore casts a 0.5-1 ounce jig nicely, but I haven't tried more.

I can easily put heavier jigs on it, but I don't cast those.
