Hey all, I've got a mate who is heading to Tuvalu for a year to do some engineering work to help them cope with global warming etc. He is wondering whether to get his ticket before he heads over.

Its meant to be pretty lacking in tourism so I figured he's probably not got much to expect when he gets there. Has anyone got any info or experience with diving over there?

My mate is over there at the moment too. He is a spearo but he has met a guy with a name something like Samessie who rents gear and does refills and may even run courses. It is sounds quite a run down place and not yet set up for tourism but awesome diving potential.

Perhaps get the ticket in Fiji on the way?

I've been up there diving a couple of times. Very little in the way of infrastructure ... or anything else for that matter.  If you want to SCUBA dive I would recommend taking your own compressor and a years supply of filters.  Otherwise stick to free diving.  Funafuti lagoon is huge and up to 40 m deep.  The best diving is away from the township - less pollution and healthier coral.  Diving outside the atolls is pretty spectacular but there are some pretty strong currents in places.  I saw fewer large fish than expected but really only scratched the surface.  Big dogtooth tuna in some of the passes.  Coral cover on the atolls and seamounts gets less and less the further south of Funafuti that you go.  Never got to the northern atolls but Nukufetau was really nice.
