My partner and I will  be spending 12 days after xmas over new years in the upper South Island starting in ChristChurch and wonder about to fish local rivers, lakes and canals.

Just need any advice as to whats the best mode of  tranpo we should hire? 4x4, campervan, car? We had been looking around with out intial option is to campervan but taken a bit back of the cost of the campervan? Any advice?

Compare the cost of the camper versus accumulated cost of motels or cabins plus the cost of hiring a 4x4 or a car, Kenshin, and see what works out the best value.  Don't forget to include camp site hire for the camper (if you can book camp sites at this late stage) as not too many places to 'free camp' around the upper South Island.

I use motels and hotels extensively thru the sth island, work on $100 to $130 per night from Nelson to hokitika, haast is worth the visit and I think its still $80 or $90 ,Queenstown online booking $150 min to $180+
From Queenstown up the east coast $130 to $150.
If you go down the motel track pm me with where your staying each night and I'll help out with places to stay.
I would suggest a camper van ,it gives you more flexibility if you get side tracked, you can stay the night on the canals as well.
The freedom camper rules have stopped a lot of roadside camping so you will need to book into campsites with the camper van in the lower South

Cheers Guys, yeah we are trying to work out the math at the moment for car vs campervan. At this stage from a logistics and flexibility point of view a campervan is looking most likely.

Yeah, an overnight at the canals sounds great. Can go fishing in the evening early morning.

If you do go the campervan way, bowl on up to the i-site or suss out the local area council for freedom camping sites that might be available for either self contained or non self contained parking.
The more you can freedom camp it, the more saved bucks that can be spent elsewhere

I think a big jeep to meet your needs, not necessarily camper van.
