Another grunter hunt yesterday.  The word was that low tide was best so an 11am low meant a 9am start and a 2pm finish.  Tried 2 spots in the Purakau channel, the first about 8 - 10m deep, and the next 200 north in about 3m.  No bites either spot so moved on to a spot Skoti showed me in Big Bay.  Few good sized KY and one 44cm grunter but the bite stopped about 10.  Moved to Mako Point to one of Snap's spots and tried 4m then about 8m.  Pretty slow, the tide was waning.  Then drifted about 1km northeast of Mako Pt southeastwards with a light breeze.  Picked up 1 decent KY.  Back to Skoti's Big Bay spot for the incoming and tried 2 different depths, about 3 then 5m.  Got a lot of KY, kept 10, but only one more grunter about 42cms.

Methods included terakihi terror flasher rigs  under the boat and stray lines further back with 1 oz and 2oz sinkers against a size 3 worm hook.  Most of the time had berley near the bottom.  It seemed to be more effective when I added mushed up pillies after the tide started coming in.

Bait in order of success: 1st bonito fillets, 2nd pilly cubes, 3rd prawns (left in the freezer too long for human consumption); 4th mullet, 5th and not-a-bite-all-day small Gulp soft baits (fished on the terahiki terror sets).

The harbour was a dirty brown on the outgoing, but quickly cleared when the tide came in.  Pleasant conditions, just a light chop on the way home.

Great to have a feed of gurnard for a change!

Hi Banana boat, sorry haven’t looked at this thread for a while. I was just anchored on the mud towards the edge of the channel. No foul. No berley just small cubes of salted bonito from the dairy on home made flasher rigs. I find berley attracts too many KY and sharks.
Oh what a smasher - two eggs and a rasher!

Was pretty much the same for us on Saturday too. Launched from Cornwallis around 9am.

We fished the turn of the low tide on the banks of the Papakura Channel. Bites were few and far between and we struggled to hook them up. Managed to score 4 good eaters between 37-44cms and put another 3 back that were basically just carrot sticks. Also caght a munty barracuda in 7m which fought like a champ and even did an aerial display. Sharp as fangs on that one!

Gave a gutter on the back of the Te Tau bank in 6m a nudge once the tide began running in. Plenty of kahawai boiling up the shallows as the afternoon moon rose and a solo grunter.

Awesome day out on the mighty Manakau with a great mate!

Lots of dead seals turning up at karioitahi lately. I stopped to have a look at one on Monday,it was still alive, but had no fat on it,ribs sticking out, back legs were lifeless as well. Makes me wonder about the ocean bounty programme I saw on Sunday ramming home the use of seal exclusion devices they are apparently using as of late....
I can't understand why so many are washing up,lack if food?
Damaged in trawl nets?
Never seen the likes of it in 10yrs out this way.
dont get my personality mixed up with my attitude,my personality is me,my attitude depends on you.

My thoughts on how to catch a fish from the Big Muddy & environs at this time of year:

Sorry to hear that. I find it quite upsetting to see animals in that situation. When we were holidaying up north before Easter we saw about 20 little blue penguins dead on Tokerau Beach. We had little kids with us, and it was pretty hard to see them spread along the high tide mark. Many were absolutely pristine, looked like they were just snoozing. but dead as a dodo.
I did some reading online and it was happening as far south as Papamoa etc. Doc specialists were reported saying the reality is there's a delicate balance in nature that can get out of whack pretty easily. A good breeding season followed by a stormy cyclone season - and the weakest youngsters don't survive. It happens every few years with the penguins.
Something similar may be happening with the seals?
Let's hope so, sad as it is.

I am looking at heading out into the kaipara for a bit of a snapper mission and as this will be the first time launching my 5.5 extreme in the kaipara, I want to launch from port Albert by the wharf.

as i havent launched out of here before i was wondering what the ramp is like(is it all tide) for a 4x4 ?
and hows the depth in tearms of leaving the ramp and heading out to otamatea Chanel ways at low tide ?

any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Guys

If heading out onto areas of flats at low tides.. best make a pre trip check out visually.. generally many channels go dry like the flats..
Then keep in mind just how low/ high tides are on charts.
Right now east coast (havnt checked west coast) are exceptionally low and high tides.
And check out good bathymetric charts.. ie navionics on line.
And suggest to have these on board with good gps... even if navionics on a smart phone or tab.

And all tide ramps.. on west coast harbours few and far between..and with extra low tides, will not be. Same applies to most east coast.

Bottom line thu , if unfamiliar in harbours espec, and west coast harbours even more... avoid low tides launching and more so coming home.
Head out a few hrs over high tide, and take the opportunity to chat with a few locals.

Dont count on 4x4 being the magic answer... we have been stuck on a popular east coast near all tide ramp.. needed a tow out...
Happened once.. hence the advice above.. has never happened again.
We where lucky...from the nearby club ramp have seen around a handful over the last few yrs get stuck on the 'all tide' ramp and seen 3 vehicles go under, including the tow minutes from doing so 1 case.

If not sure ask, and even then go check out at low tide before hand, noting how low the tides are on that day.

We used to fish the manukau before electronics,  pre bathymetric charts, gps...just map and compass...

Hi Laserice.
Stay from low tide on any Kaipara ramp, especially around the full/new moon, as any ramp gets slippery with a 1inch thick muddy film on it. Many though will even drop off where the concrete stops, i dont know the ramp in question but have grown up fishing Kaipara ramps, Pahi, Tinopai, Ruawai, Shelley Beach among others and if you stay clear of Low you should be fine. As to finding Snapper in August. You'll probably have to go to the graveyard, and i suggest you wait until you get a few trips under you first as that is not a place you want to be in the wrong conditions. E.g wind against tide coming home.
Good luck, i am sure you will be fine, head there on a busy day and follow out some locals
Why choose either diving or fishing when you can do both. Besides crayfish tail is very good bait!!

My brother uses that ramp all the time he has a 2wd ute and has no problems it's been along time since I've been out from that ramp in pretty sure it's fine around low. I'll try and find out from my brother as he's up there all the time. As long as stick to the channel you will have enough water at low tide. I usually fish either side of low tide and launch from the hoteo ramp. Still getting some nice snaps without having to go to graveyard

Headed West to 55m Yesterday morning.  Lots of fish around but most of them were the wrong colour;  Barracouta and Kahawai mostly.  We stuck it out and cut a path through them to reach the snapper below.
Came home at the end of the morning with 14 snapper and a couple of gurnard between 3 anglers.  Not the most productive session but  a good winter work-out.  Quite a few other boats out there scattered around at different depths.  I'd be keen to know how they fared.

Biggest went 10lb while most were in the 3-4lb bracket - great eaters!  (If i could get the photo-uploader to work i would show you.  Seems very unreliable on this site.  works sometimes but not the next.)

The couta baits weren't very popular though.  I stuck with it for an hour or so, fishing squid on one hook and couta on the other, but the fish baits went untouched.  A switch to fresh kahawai proved more effective.
