Were intending yesterday to walk over to the other side of the island to
try landbased fishing but Stu generously offered us the use of his small
Mac boat & electric motor, so we setout to a nearby sheltered island. We
never caught anything on small lures but had an enjoyable time exploring
the island.

Connection too slow .... to be cont. later

Managed to get a meal of island clams, giant oysters & mantis shrimp

Now for something different ,,,, namely a nocturnal coconut crab hunt.
We were in the capable hands of locals Albert & James along with the two
resident dogs. Unfortunately Adrian & myself were armed solely with an
underpowered torch each as the hunt charged about this way & that with
Albert in bare feet which seemed rather questionable considering the terrain
& the fact our quarry possess a formidable set of claws.
Found quite a few small ones but eventually had three decent sized specimens
in our bag.
james can be seen here holding one down with his bare foot!!!!!
One of three caught

Am giving up ... service is hopeless ... might try later

OK long story short whilst system seems to be running.

Eventually caught ( or at least Albert & James did ) three reasonable
sized crabs which were hung in a bag from the rafters.

About 4 am was woken by what I thought was Adfrian shuffling & rustling about
but when it went on for 5 mins or more realised the noise was coming from
MUCH closer & when I shone a torch found this critter climbing the wall less
than 1/2 mtr from where my head was lying.
We managed to get it in a bucket but it jumped out again to hide behind a
cranny so had to try contain it by stuffing towels above/below then keeping
torches shining at it ( power is off from 11pm to 11am )
However after about an hour it began to move again so after considering
waking up Stu to help but deciding at that hour he would be more fearsome
than any angry cc crab had to find Albert then wake him to come help.

He managed to recapture it & discover another one we had not seen on a
rafter above which he managed to get down then tie up.
I can tell you does not take much noise now to wake me up or from having
nightmares !!!

Considering the trauma involved in their capture it was of some consulation that they made
for a tasty meal.

The machete is required to penetrate the chest killing the crab & to drain any bitter tasting liquid
however I also managed to slice my finger in the process as well thru not realising it was so sharp.

The next day went out fishing covering literally miles for a total of one small barracouta
plus a failed hook up on a GT & a couple of fish lost

We had 3 between us & presumed as with crays, prawns etc that the
best meat would be in their bulb like tails but when we cut them open
found they were full of a buttery very rich yellowish/brown goo which
was not to our taste so concentrated on the meat in the claws etc.

However we asked a local that was passing local who said that was
the best part & went away happy as a sandboy with one of them.

We found out later that the contents of the tail are far too rich to eat
on their own but great for dipping the meat in or spreading on a cracker.

Ah well live & learn.

The clear winner of this week for the most meritorious catch
has to be this local with his Maori wrasse ........

Caught using his homemade speargun & operating from a dugout.
