Friday 3rd August
PDS and I drove up to Omaha on Thursday night, launched the boat, and parked up in the estuary, ready for an early departure for Great Barrier and the pirate party…..Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggg!!!
We stopped off at one of Damo’s spots around 6.30am in
50mtrs at the waterfalls/Little Barrier for a softbait. Managed a few pannies
and then decided to head to Jimmies for a drift before heading into the Great
Barrier for an in close burley and fresh bloody bait session (which is what we
came for).
Well Jimmies had birds and bait but the fishing was slow and the wind had chopped up Craddocks so it was lumpy as. Next spot was a drift along False head in 45-60mtrs with no luck on softies and jigs again. Squid says lets come back here with some fresh bloody baits later and I bet we get smashed!?
We had a bit of a cruise around and bumped into Tagit with his crew of Dead Ant, Grunta and Boulder. Nothing happening lets head in closer…then squid spots some birds in a bay rounding up bait.
5mtrs with a kelpie bottom…looks like a skull dragging spot. Time after time squid casts his fresh KY bait into one of 2 green holes amongst the kelp and catches one of these fine dark red specimens. This was sight fishing at its best in clear pristine waters…we were amped to say the least!
We stayed the night at this spot as it was very sheltered and the snaps were there right into the night!
Saturday 4th August
What a view to wake up to in the morning.
Squid says let’s try big bloody baits off False Head in 50mtrs, I reckon that we will get smashed bro! What I have learnt since meeting PDS is if he makes a statement like this you should go with the flow. And what do you know.
This guy had an interesting piercing and was smashed by and angry snap.
A couple of these turned up and went back as we had more than enough meat!
Well that was fun – time to head into the Fitzroy Hilton for a raft up, late lunch, and catch up with fellow pirates before the big night.
Karp as usual looked after the boys with a great venue, food, and company!
Ewen was in great form and kept us entertained all night. It was great to meet another like-minded westie and look forward to getting you out for a fish soon bro!
Sunday 5th August
All good things must come to an end and after helping Kim clean up a bit we were off to give False head one more try on our last 3 baits before heading home. Second drop on a manky, soft pillie and BOOM! A nice way to depart the barrier.
Some good pic's from a awesome weekend. It was mean to meet all you guys too!! And thanks to kim!!
