I'm a Cantab too Brooook.
Back in the late 60's, a mate of mine caught a kingi at the Rangitata mouth.
It was such an unusual catch, nobody knew what it was, true!
It got sent to the museum to be id'd
Good luck with your quest SeaRaider & let us know how you get on
Since I married one I am ! Originally from Auckland but decided the pace was too fast for me. Have had to learn how to fish all over again though. Now most of my time over summer is spent chasing salmon at the river mouths. Had I not got one my first season I would probably have given up by now as you put a lot of hours in without seeing a fish.
I have bait fished around the Lyttelton heads and further around banks peninsula and found some ok spots for blue cod but nothing spectacular to date and tend to head to Motunau of Kaikoura. MadKeen# wrote: Has anyone here had experience catching kings around Banks Peninsula, Taylors, Sumner etc ? I have read plenty of reports of fish sighted or caught but haven't found much in this forum. I plan to drag some lures or drop some jigs from Sumner to the Lyttelton Heads this summer and would be interested to hear from anyone that has done this successfully.
