G'day,
I'm fairly new to fishing, used to fish a lot when I was 5-10 years old with some fishing line wrapped around the big black sticks broken off a flax bush, worked wonders with those things off the back of boats in Lyttleton and over in Little Akaloa off the wharf there.
Only recently started fishing again about October last year, bought a 12ft surfcast rod + reel from the wharehouse but ended up taking it back and buying a Killwell 8ft rod and reel combo from Blackwells here in Kaiapoi on special for $85 down from $120 I think. Also got myself a fishing license before June so I wouldn't be paying $100+. So far I've caught one small brown trout in the Waimakariri river about 3 weekends ago...not my sort of thing though, no fight in it (though it did manage to hook me up when I was getting the hook out!) I prefer saltwater fishing.
I've tried Kaiaraki beach many times, it's only down the road. Haven't caught anything there yet, though I haven't given it a good go. Does anyone know the best times to go fishing at Kairaki, tides, baits and where exactly I should go? Normally I just go where the rocks are before the narrowing in the channel, but haven't caught anything, I've seen guys up casting into the surf and into the narrowing in the channel, is this where I should be going?
Any other good fishing spots around Christchurch, or Canterbury? I've still got to give Taylors mistake a go.
