I started researching catching these on softbaits a while back
- and the good news is it can be done! 3 inch curly tail grubs on a very, very slow retrieve. Ultralight gear naturally. I just got distracted and never followed through. Is winter the time for these?

I tried as well, but no luck at all :(

I made that bucktail lure, but didn't work. I tried even delta's of rivers, but really no luck.

Think the Fly boys target them sometimes. I've only ever speared or netted them out on the muddy. I've got a bit of a lead on some from a local just last weekend actually. Yet to do any recon on it yet, just need a few days of settled weather and an incoming evening tide.

It would be cool Dan if you proof the catch. I would be more then happy to run this mission with you, but currently I'm too far :(
btw. I'm not so sure about NZ kind of these, but in Norway they are very aggressive on prey and have very large mouth, so if some would be around I guess you would be catching them regularly.

Hmm, Boarfish you say...
I caught this type just next to Army Bay on sabiki
https://blog.csiro.au/friday-fish-time-12/
They were schooling there in size about 20cm.

Anyway, I'm doing quite good, but busy. Thanks.
No time to fish at all :(
Plus, we are expecting baby very soon, so it will take some time before we can fly somewhere again. The first may be invitation from my friend to Grand Canary Islands. Something I'm really looking forward to do as there is also some 'yakers' community.

Hey Travis good to hear form you mate, sorry to hear you haven't been fishing, but not so sorry to hear you're off to the GCI looks like a pretty mint place for a fish. You better get in some paddle practice, just in case you have to out run any pirates up there Wink

When I saw this TEDtalk I reminded two things related to NZ and wanted to share this  knowledge/talk with you guys.

Things I recalled:
1) First day I came to NZ and had a chat with the first "Kiwi", I got the general statement of him that NZ don't care too much about pollution because "here winds blow" (we had a chat about cars, because I had to buy one and topic moved to car's emission limits which are set in Europe)
2) The sunny day I was yaking around Shakespeare park peninsula and had terrible headache from the pollution made by boats, seeing thick dark layer of smog above the water.

Here is the talk:
