Hi there, that will be small kahawai. They are quite common in the waters between Eastern Beach and Motuihe/Waiheke etc. We saw a lot of that same action yesterday off Beachlands. They bust up for a few seconds, then move on. I wouldn't recommend trying to paddle over to them unless you're Lisa Carrington. In autumn, you'll start to get big kahawai in the 3kg class which are great sport fish and nice eating. Well worth towing a bibbed lure in the area towards Musick Pt.
This time of the year, the shallows you're fishing are a breeding ground for bronzewhalers, so you might have some fun if you use a big messy bait! And if your long line gets some missing hooks on it, you'll know why. I know some guys game fish for the sharks land based off the little flat island off Beachlands, and they get some massive ones.

vs Lisa Carrington..one work up was close enough to make my best but futile olympic attempt to reach it. I was trolling to Musick Pt because I have caught good Kahawai there before, so will note your advice for autumn, thanks. Also I've come across Hammerheads around there too and that did cross my mind today when I felt a decent tug on the longline while retrieving it.
