Thanks again for all the awesome tips on this threat. My F14 fisher has been born today and I have received the first photos.
The communication with FREWS Marine (Brendon & Kirsten) has been fantastic and knowing that they do their best to understand their customers' wishes is very comforting.

In the end I did go with a Honda 60 Big smile. But looking at the latest Frewza photo I guess I'm missing about sixty of those horses at the moment....

no not a smaller car, but another wayWink its now a proper garden ornament.

serviced my own motor again the other day, piece of piss. dont have to take it somewhere and leave it and get reamed.

4.1 High sided Dinghy.

Hi, I'm currently building the trailer for, and fitting out a Frewza 4.1 high sided tiller steer dinghy.
It is a standard "motor on the transom" model (not the optional pod and higher transom) but has a few minor mods....

Such as the transom/stern  position 8 inches further forward while pontoons remain normal length (like an inflatable), and there are rear side alloy bins for dry storage, with the smallest Icy-Tek sitting in between (also doubles as the third seat).

There is a front compartment/seat against the anchor well forward, that holds a fuel tote), so a little bit of extra weight all up, but the fuel forward should help the balance as most dinghy's in my experience are arse heavy with the captain sitting at the stern. It's a very pragmatic and smart looking boat IMO.

Frewza have rated the dinghy for up to 50hp, but say 30hp should be sweet.
As well as occasional sea fishing it will be used mostly for freshwater including trolling for trout, for which I have traditionally used an old Johnson 4.5 hp 2 stroke auxiliary and it ticks over real sweet at the low trawling or trolling revs.

I am interested to hear the opinions of what motor would be best suited for the dinghy
(But for one particularly rocky dam I will keep the old auxiliary and swap it over, using it on it's own, as to plane on this waterway is just asking for an appointment with a slightly submerged rock).

But for the rest of the places I really would like to both troll and plane with just a single motor,  as that would allow me to fit a comfy seat (as with only one engine, the helm position will remain static).
It seems that in broad terms a 4 stroke outboard is about the weight of a 2 stroke, and an auxiliary, combined.

Will a 4 stroke (say 30hp) troll sufficiently slowly and still get 3 up on the plane?
Would a 50 hp 4 stroke be too weighty for the slightly more arse heavy tiller steer? (I note previous comments that the Frewza's handle transom weight well).
What's the experiences of readers?

I like 2 strokes... is there a 2 stroke main motor that doesn't drive you crazy with it's lumpy idle that's suitable for extended trolling as well?
I am open to all Japanese or USA made 2 stroke or 4 strokes, such as Honda, Tohatsu, Suzuki, Yamaha, Mercury.

I would usually travel two up, but maybe 3 up on occasions.
Any advice and opinions appreciated!

I have all of the brands mentioned represented as dealers within easy reach for service.
Cheers, Captain Moonlight

4 stroke only way to go for trolling, they )all brands) are all good engines, my pick would be the Tohatsu 30hp 4 stroke, fuel injected, smooth and great on fuel. They are very competitively priced.

I've got a 3.9 Reel Pontoon with a 30 cylinder 30hp Yamaha. Very happy with the performance but certainly wouldn't want to have anything less. If I was switching to four stroke, I'd probably be leaning towards a 40.

Looking at getting a 4.1m high sided dingy for mainly spearfishing use. Anyone on here dived off them and if so how comfortable is it with 3 guys plus gear? Any real noticeable difference between the 4.1 and the F14 other than 300mm?

This is a F14 with 50hp two stroke and 3 divers on board with scuba gear. Freeboard looks all okay.

I had an F14 dinghy (upgraded to an F18HT) and found 3 divers plus gear was easy enough for the boat, just gotta keep your gear tidy. A mate in Dunedin got the 4.1 high side, same thing with regards to keeping gear tidy - in fact its the same for any boat I reckon, good habit to keep gear stowed, makes life a hell of a lot easier.

I preferred the F14 for the duck boards at the transom making life a lot easier getting in and out of the boat for me, the younger fellas just got up over the sides on both boats so no difference for them so long as they had something to hold on to. I have a bad shoulder so struggle to pull myself up so in that essence the F14 wins hands down.

Comparisons between the F14 and the 4.1 dinghy. -

They are both the same hull length.
The 4.1 is open, no cabin structure, so no shelter from wind and spray. If diving, that mightn't matter much.
The 4.1 is tiller steer from the back, F14 forward steering and motor controls. Ive had both models, F14 is certainly superior, but a lot more expensive.
I think can get a boarding platform at the back on both models. A fold-down ladder would make getting on and off easier too.

You do not need a fold down ladder - cannot use it with fins on, and most are not deep enough.
The Frewza duckboards each side of the engine pod are excellent for entry onto and into the boat. Especially the one on the side without engine steering and cables (port side looking forward). You only need that one if on a budget, but a tiller steer hull could use both. They are at water level, lean your weight on them and they go under, slip up and on, turn round and sit there if free diving, or pull yourself like a fat seal into the back of the boat if wearing scuba.

Hi TBone, any more pics by chance?  i'm most interested in your arch/folding baitboard set up.

am just in the process of finalising details for a F16 and had something fairly similar in mind... will you be able to use yours for skiing/dredging off too or don't care??

Hi Captain,
Here are a few more photos as requested. The boat is still sitting in Invers as the engine supplier had a bit of a hiccup. But the Frews have sorted it. Outboard install should happen monday next week and nothing else throwing a spanner, I should be able have it up in WLG soon. Clap (I am happy to post some close-ups then)
In the phone conversation with Brendon, I mentioned the tow function, and he said, that is requiring some reinforcements. (That will be the plate under the rocket/baitboard arch.) He has also integrated the anchor light wiring into the tubing.
My understanding is, that is a fold-up bait board, rather than fold down, which makes sense to me.
Enjoy the photos
