thanks for the f16 size. Those pics of the F14 really do emphasize the point of entry

You know you want one mate! Interesting on the DNA, could be a contender, can they do a 4mm hull? I think that is an absolute must for Wellington conditions, the 18 degree deadrise would make it a bit more tender but a good ride in the chop if the entry is deep enough.

The DNA looks very Stabi-like, they are an attractive boat - nice lines, I don't think Frewza is the 'prettiest' boat out there, but the ugly ones always go harder!

I actually like the older F14 cabin which was not scalloped at the edges, just straight, far easier to mount aerials and spot lights etc. Do DNA do a cabin / cuddy version?

I see Frewzas website has the f16 as 4.95mtrs l.o.a in the specs which is 16ft'2  7/8 but i distinctly remember Brendon saying they are 5 meters. Obviously they used to be called a 495 fisher.. hmm i better have a measure tommorow

Hey i seen a mate of a mates dna 515 centre console driving home after work. stopped and had a perve,
Very nice in a lot of areas.. was impressed. Had some good looking ideas eg, the drain and floor configeration down the sides of where floor meets pontoons giving a better toe recess which is great for jigging especially, Its only minimal difference than the frewza though. Can tell you one thing,
The finishing and welding is good but not as good as frewzas imo.
It had a sexy arsed alloy 'c' section trailor though with cradle and all, that gave me a boner

FF, your right about the ugly ones..LOL i waiting for the dna info coming through, but the problem is i swore to myself to never buy another boat without seeing it/driving it. at least I've been in in your F14 and fished out of it. the one draw back for me is the non-flat floor with regard to jigging, but i'll get used to it/get over it. the boat pirate is on about, i think davo saw in the naki. dna said its a 5m painted, with small bimini? dna do cuddy and cc.  frewza freight on a pallet is $920, better than paying for ferry and driving down me thinks. tempting to drive though as haven't been that far southEmbarrassed.  plenty of time to think about that one. must come around to yours andrew and take some notes prior to orderingWink just about to take the euro to the ferryCry had so many epic adventures in that beast., can't begin to tell ya.

I don't think it would be an issue Ritchy, it's more workable than you think, but can see your concerns, however, probably worth a call to Brendan to ask him if the floor can be raised 75mm (that would make it flat in full width)?? I doubt it would upset the COG much, and would allow more effective use of scuppers.

If you did this, it would make room for a small 40l underfloor fuel tank, which may negate the COG issue as it would mean weight low in the hull? There's always ways around the freight issue, I know a few people in the SI with spare vehicles with towbars, grab-a-seat flight and boat on ferry by itself is far less than the $960.

I know your pain, you get attached to boats, I think I've had about 12-14 boats???.. so I'm a bit of a boat-slut and have managed to shelve that emotional attachment somewhat these days...

We'll hopefully get out this weekend, give you a bell later today.

Thanks flyfisher,, well thought out setup. Is the difference between the rides "slightly" better in favour of the frewza, or way better?, in your opinion? It's hard to judge when looking at those pics, but I take it you wouldn't change anyway for the customisable service and response you get from frewza. Was the stabil a much bigger boat than yours?

The Stabi was the same size, the Frewza is a better ride in the rough - no doubt about it, but mine has a 4mm hull which made a big difference. The Frewza has deeper sides from factory and imparts a feeling of more space (it does not look it, but it is quite roomy - easy 2-3 people).

The stabicraft 389 has a poorly thought out transom and it wastes a large amount of space, although it has a really good anchor well setup IMO. Correct, I always thought a custom built boat was out of the realm of joe average, but it really is not, and I'm happy to finally be able to "get what I want" not an off-the-shelf mass produced number, cut from the same jig as the rest.  It's really a 14ft dinghy with a 16ft boat capability. Cheers.

Just on the 4mm hull option that Flyfisher got. When I went in to spec out my boat, Brendon talked me out of getting the 4mm hull, basically he said no to $350. In 500+ boats of the F14 style, he has done only 3 with 4mm hulls, 2 of them were for professional paua diving outfits, I'm sure Flyfisher can tell you where the third went ;)

what reasons did he give for not getting the 4 mm hull. Would not that bit of extra weight also improve ride.?

Cheers, what about side by side comparison with the 1530 stabi in your pics. I see the difference with the below water profile. In terms of of size comparison was there much difference between the two? Onlyask cos I've seen the 1530 and am trying to get a size perspective of the 440.

DNA do make Very nice boats, considered one myself for awhile. and yes they can do a 4mm hull

on the flat floor thing richie, as you know we jigged hundreds of kingys out of the frewza and the non flat floor does get quite annoying but its definatly workable.

That's only a 389 in those pics mashinator, not a 1530. I had too many hull splits and deflection in my previous boats to not even consider 3mm alloy again, BUT, I drive my boats hard, basically full throttle everywhere up until anout 15 knots of wind where I button off - most people are content to cruise at say 4000rpm, but I enjoy going quick in the rough, this has a toll on alloy hulls though and I'm 100% positive if I had gone the 3mm hull I would have deflection around the ribs by now. I think for most people 3mm would be fine, but Wellington conditions can get pretty hairy at times as some of you know and the last thing I want to be stuck with is a hull split 5kms out into Cook Strait - (not that it would really matter much with a pontoon with 3-5 air chambers, but I'm fussy on a quality, lasting product).

I also think the extra weight improves the ride as John says, it is NOTICEABLY quieter skipping across the chop in a 4mm hull vs 3mm hull (the sound is a dull thud, thud, thud skipping chop... not a loud twang, twang, twang!), the 3mm reasonates far more, but the 4mm keel strip I also had added would also help this again - Brendan did an amazing job of fabricating my hull with the keep strip - it's seamless - 8mm of alloy is soooooo damn strong, and a really hard welding job to do on such thin plate with such curvatures.

Also the extra security of 4mm hull plate resting on trailer rollers is a plus for me when towing (some places I fish are down semi-4WD tracks). I really think for such a small amount of money it's a worthy 'peice-of-mind upgrade as was the full length keel strip - it makes the boat extremely stiff and safe in the knowledge if I do konk a log at 30 knots I'll be fine.

The stabi 1530 is a larger boat than the Frewza and has far more floor space, the Frewza is only 4.1m not 4.4m. I still think the Kiwikraft 440 and 460 are the kings of the 4.5m plus class. Daveo can tell you about the Senator as well, a very nice hull, not as many around as the competition, but ticks many of the boxes (just won't fit in your garage Ritchy!)...  Interestingly there seems to be a big difference IMO between the interior size in a 4.4m boat vs a 4.1m boat.

I'm intrigued by the DNA, anyone got some pics other than stock pics?... I need a new project!

DNA are very much like Frewza from the contact I've had with both places. Both make great boats, both are incredibly easy to deal with and the answer from both to customisation requests has always been, 'no problem'. I don't think you can go wrong with getting a boat from either. You can certainly get what you want. In terms of service they are both miles ahead of anywhere else I've dealt with. For a start, they reply to emails!

The below is a pic DNA have sent me of the new 420 CC transom. 4mm pod.

Andrew. The boat pictured on the left is the stabi 389????  Wasnt sure as it has name of your current boat.
As posted earlier had a stabi 1530 long side the Frewza the other day at the ramp. Bit longer ,wider ,very high sides. Plenty of inner space ,but fairly sure from what i saw the point of entry on frewza was sharper /deeper.
One particular thing i like about the F14 is there is for 2 people just the right space. If bait fishing i can cast line well astern of boat as i always do ,sit in the seat ,rest the rod against the transom ,and have it in perfect reaching distance.Just watch the rod tip for any action. Also gives a nice line angle ,not too high as in a rod holder.Reckon i catch more fish not holding rod.Maybe just me though.

Yeah, that was my old Stabi 389 John, same name... always call my boats "Manaka" served me well for many thousand hours of boating she did! Means absolutley nothing but it's tradition! That DNA looks good, would still like to see some real-time pics, it looks from that CAD that it has even less flat floor than the Frewza and the floor is set quite low?

Yip, the Stabicrafts have a flatter entry John, no doubt about it. I think they 389 was a tad more stable at rest than the F14, but hanging 2 big guys off the side off either and still being able to fish makes up for the lack of internal beam of a pontoon boat. I like pontoons as every inch of the boat is useable and fishable, my old fyran 440 could only handle people fishing in 'certain' places!

I just had a burn up at Mangawahi Heads. Took the F14 with its 50hp Honda, out on the estuary in dead calm, and did WOT. With 2 men aboard and fishing gear -
With tidal current - 29.5knots at 6000rpm
Against tidal current - 25.5knots at 6000rpm.

Earlier, the bar looked bad to me, 2m swell and waves breaking right across, so we stayed at home. Later, the swell dropped to 1m, and the bar was easy. One thing I noticed,  the depth over the bar was 2.6m at half tide, and 1.5m at low tide. We could go at any tide, compared to the Kaituna near here which is about only 0.8m at half tide, so cant go any lower I think.

The fishing varied from fabulous to poor, as usual.
First time out we went to a place that Hogdog suggested (thanks a lot), and drifted with baits. Came home with 15 snaps keepers (28-40cm) - excellent.
second time, 3 days later, the same place, not a thing! Searched many other places, and managed only 2 snaps, just legal.
