I'll try to get down to spot r for the 6am launch on Friday. Wont be long after that if I don't make it for 6am.

Weather looks good. Stocked up on gear, as I'm sure to lose lots there.

I'm planning on Saturday, will keep it local. Would be good to have ch69 updates on wherever people are at... I'm pretty sure that's a duplex (repeater) channel - not sure if we're meant to use it though. I'll probably aim for the domain or karewa.

I think channel 69 is for working Maritime radio, but for the Great Barrier region, we should technically use 68 which is for our region, but I don't think it matters. List of them here: NZ VHF I see that Whakatane monitor chan 69 over the summer as the surf lifesavers use it.

I'll give you a call as well. Often wondered how far the radio traffic travels.

Im totally a newbie to VHF but my old man gave me one that he wasnt using. Its a Cobra Marine 3watt so not that grunty. I dont think the range is that good as Ive tried calling guys from my place when they are off The Domain about 4kms away and no reply ?
I did get some scrambled asian talk on channel 69 the other day Big smile

The wind blew onshore today and put the surf up to 2m but its just turned westerly and is dropping already. I think it will be fine tomorrow but will check at 5am. If no good i will abort till saturday.

Yes, came up a bit. Already dropped to 1.3m max, .8 sig. Super short period swell, so I can't see it hanging around. Forecast to be .6, should be sweet.

Anyone heading out during the week days? Pretty new to kayaking but keen to get out. Weekends are pretty hard due to family and an old house (more work) but as I work for myself weekdays are all go ( which means 5 potential days of fishing rather than 2). Keen to meet up with some other keen fishermen/ fisher woman.
