My VHF only 3 watt too and has a 1 watt battery saver option. Not overly confident with its range either.

Forecast looking better towards friday and the weekend. Im keen for some pannies.

Jono I think fish always slow down a bit over winter as they conserve energy and their metabolisms slow down. Can be a nice surprise pulling up good fish when you are expecting barely legal.

The fish I got last weekend fought OK I thought. True to their size. Change with them fattening up for spawning I guess.

My VHF is 1-5w. Calling Coastguard is a good idea Cam, see if they pick you up, as they are the ones you most need to pick up..

I don’t want to lecture, but if you have a vhf and want to use it, I highly recommend coastguard’s vhf course. No point having it if you don’t know how to use it in an emergency. Plus all vhf users are supposed to be licensed. Not a big deal and really worthwhile...

I was surfcasting down spot R last night and even though harbour conditions was reporting 25 knotts there were no white caps. I caught a gurnad and snap both at 45cm. 😎
