hey guys, im looking for a land based rod around 8 foot rated 15-24kg for an overhead reel.
ive looked around & it seems the best ive found so far when under load were the live fibre & the shimano rods that ian miller bought out, these 2 rods are similar in price & both are 2 piece.

i usually use an 8kg setup for my snapper fishing that i max out, but in the shallows im starting to get under gunned.
i havent bought a 15kg rod in almost 15yrs (jig stik for kings) so i have no idea what to look for in todays grunt stiks.
some of the rods i tested out put more hurt on my back or my legs, others would pull you over before it loaded up.
it would piss me off to spend 3-400 on a rod only to find out something equal or better was available!!

any suggestions would be great

Hey BananaBoat theres some good stuff on offer for around that price. I too like the live fibre rods. Composite Developments do a nice LBG rod that may suit your needs.

Also I find 8 feet slightly too long, theres a fair few rods on offer around 7ft 6 though which i would recommend looking at.

Also have you thought of getting one custom made? Talk to either Matt at Just Fishin on Wairau Rd (Auckland) or give Keiron at Reel Rodz a call and see what they can do for you.

Hope that helps

I picked up a nice Offshore 800 off trademe for $150 in very near new cond.

Its 8ft long 1pc 15-24kg alloy butt section and gimble nock, alloy reel seat, hard chrome guides with a Fuji SiC end guide. Rod was made by Rodworkz.

I was in Just Fishin a couple weeks ago and saw that they have an Offshore 700 in there on sale, might be worth taking a look at that too.

The Kilwell 15-24 Jelly tip is a nice piece of kit, overhead designed, I have one at home, new....A stout solid looking rod, but decided after I got it back home, that it was way too powerful for me....another compulsive TAS  purchase at a "Rebels" saleTongue

Thanks for the suggestions guys

I sort of knew this might happen..... lots of nice rods to choose from you guys suggestions, but can only buy one of them.
Then again, down at westhaven in auckland, there are 3 fishing outlets within one minutes walk of each other.... hmmmm, am sure theres a good deal to be had there.

Just one more thing to add.... with a 15-24kg rod, how does the rod stand up to 24kg line when targeting kings?
Some rods perform better at the lower rating than the other.

A mate of mine has the 15-24kg CD land based stik using 15kg line for kings at that time, the kings he caught that day were around line weight & managable.
When we fished the ranfurly banks, my mate used a TLD50 with 24kg on the same composite rod & it performed well.

Im being a tight arse here cause i dont want to buy one 15kg rod & a 24kg rod as well.
i will put my old Daiwa SG50H on my not yet bought rod, 15kg nylon for snaps in the shallows & 24kg braid for my first ever land based king.

What do you guys reckon?

I've got a 15-24 live fiber too and love it.
Good with 24kg, it's seen me through lots of kingis over the last three years (and a HUGE ray too unfortunately)

Just to be annoying and make decisions harder....
You sure you wanna go braid from the rocks? I've been doing it this last season and I hate it .
Kind of got use to it then used a mates mono set up on a trip and forgot how much easier it is and how much more abrasion resistance I got outta mono. But if you need the extra line cap on the reel might be okay.

Just another couple cents worth.

WOULD HAVE TO AGREE WITH BADFISH.used braid for a couple years before  it became fab.Now back to mono( has more give and some times that is what catchs the fish ) ,use a beastmaster 10kg running 9kg with a 24kg leader wind on, not to much gets away .but hay give it a go and see how it works for you. (mind your fingers) braid cuts quick.
