Engine hours normally KB. We sometimes go for 10 day long trips and troll maybe 12+ hours per day. On some of those trips we only have 1 or potentially no fuel stop so I get anal about estimating fuel consumption. What I do is have a trolling speed fuel number, and cruising speed fuel number. Idling around when anchoring etc is minimal fuel use. When we head out I mentally note the amount of time we do at cruising rpms and then take that off the engine hours to get the trolling hours with a small adjustment for idling time. I can usually work out a 10 day trip within around 5% or so if I need to by using those numbers and planning my trip on the charts or Google Earth. Without having an instantaneous fuel burn number from a seatrial or live fuel burn gauge etc it is normal that people slightly underestimate their actual cruising fuel burn by using the engine hours which include the idling time etc. If you want a better estimate use a watch and note your duration at cruise rpm's separately to your idle rpms or trolling rpms. After a few trips you can probably do a little bit of calculus to work out what the fuel burn at the different speeds is. |
