Heading up next week to this area, just wondering if anyone has heard of action or signs of pelagic life? Will be heading out from Whangaruru and if the sea is good will venture out to 100M + line. Is it worth taking puka gear - I don't know any of spots personally but is there a likelihood of accidentally driving over something rocky with a big mouth nearby? Thanks in advance....

Skippies are in close off Cape Brett and flying fish inside the trench so all shaping up well with fish bound to be around. Im delivering Eldonna back up end of next week for the start of the Charter Season and will fish out wide on the wayup.  Will report in.

Looking at maps I think you'll be lucky to get wide before at least Thursday. Definitely take Puka, Tarakihi and jigs.

Got out yesterday, warmest water was 19.4 degrees, at about 120M. At 200M (half way between Cape Brett and Knights) it was 18.8, funny thing is that on the way out it was about 18.4 and on the way back in it was 19. Saw sunfish at various depths, closest was at Danger rock and then today again at Waiwiri Rock. Saw no skippies all day nor any flying fish. No sign of pelagics but saw a pod of pilot whales.... caught a couple of tarakihi and a gem fish and a snapper in 120M.... lost a good fish on a jig, the kevlar cord failed like 20M below the boat. Caught too many spiny dogfish. Weather not not looking too good for any more wide trips, may have to be some close in snapper or maybe kingfish....
