Hi all, im from Ireland and will be spending a couple of weeks in Auckland. I wont be bringing any fishing gear with me but wouldnt mind trying around the city and hinterland. Is it possible to rent shore fishing gear or would i have to go down the route of a guide? thanks

Shore fishing is going to hard as the winter cold has just set in and the fish are definitely moving out deeper now. There will be a few fish around in the right places still but you might go quite a few extra hours between fish now compared to the summer season.  There are a few charters around where you might be able to jump on as an individual angler joining in with a larger group and at this time of year that is more likely to get you some fish for the pan.

Thanks for the reply. im not a boat man and have plenty of experience of quiet hours and "scratching" for small fish in winter conditions. The main thing would be to get my hands on some gear. I would downsize everything as im not looking for the pan, just want to register some southern hemisphere species.

That's an interesting question - I am not aware of any guides specialising in land-based fishing around Auckland. There are in the Coromandel area, about 2 hours south, and presumably up in the Bay of Islands (3 hrs north). They would supply gear.

I am aware of an Asian-owned fishing shop in the downtown Auckland area (5-10 mins walk along Quay St from the main street, Queen St) which has a sign out the front saying it rents rods/reels, but I wouldn't be very confident in the quality.

To be honest, when you can buy a basic entry level Shimano combo at a shop in the CBD for about NZ$50-60 that will catch the typical local coastal species such as kahawai and snapper, there's not much of a market for renting gear. If you want gear for a few days, rather than a couple of hours, for convenience you could buy some and then donate it to a local kid at the end of your trip.

yes maybe you are right tamure kid, my partner is working in the daytime so i would just be heading off short distances and fishing for 2-3 hours, not travelling up the coast 3hrs and back etc.

maybe fish close to the city a few days and get some value out of buying the gear, 50-60 dollars is around 30-40 euro, so it would definitely be the easiest/cheapest option over a few days

that rod combo could cover a lot of types of fishing, good to know about that central fishing shop too. thanks

Kahawai would be a viable target corbyeire, good fighting fish - consult google. bring a reel and a few bits. buy a cheap rod and bait when you get here, and you're away.

It'd be great if someone could help with decent spots for a 3-hour fish (including transport time) from the city. it takes an hour or so to get to the likes of Leigh or the end of Whangaparaoa Peninsula, so that wouldn't allow much time for fishing in a 3-hour window.

I'm thinking some of the rocky shoreline on the North Shore - at dawn or twilight, maybe Orakei Wharf?

I would take him down to Waikato river mouth from karioitahi but don't have a 4wd anymore. He could try Hamilton's gap?

Okay, two hours' drive away, with three hours to walk in/fish, puts you potentially among some awesome fishing water - particularly to the east coast north of Auckland, up the Coromandel Peninsula (south), and on the west coast beaches (not for the faint hearted in cooler parts of the year, and without specialist beach fishing gear).

Ill leave those west coast beaches to the experienced!
What about public transport to a mark or two, is it viable at all. On a tight budget, wasnt planning on renting a vehicle til leaving Auckland after a week.
I see Orakei and all those man made piers and wharfs are only a 30 min bus ride out - gets you out deep into the water. Same area Tamakai drive, might be the best bet to start. And a bit more sympathetic when not knowing the waters of the beaches and channels.
Manukau looks feesable as does Whangaparoa.
