Hi folks,

Does anyone have any advice on the best options when the paint on your Ali hardtop starts going bad?

Boat has been uncovered for nearly 5 years now, and the 'not overly brilliant' factory paint is really starting to suffer. I'm betting that repainting is expensive, and if the paint hadn't had best practice application in the first place then that might not be the best option...

Can paint be stripped easily? Or should it just be covered in vinyl?

Reason for the post above
The paint prep will be the problem.. not the paint.
Putting vinyl over the top you still have the original prep conditions , plus new oxidisation, and bad paint surface will not help.
Clean up and start from scratch.
Chances are the paint is 2 pot...pretty resistance stuff.. but you may like to have a go with some paint strippers.
Even so media blasting definitely after and still VERY fresh for any vinyl or paint applications.

What is the recommended prep prior to vinyl?

Freshly sanded (un-oxidised) aluminium under vinyl seems like it could be a bad idea.

I would imagine so also.. thu it would be sealed. If damaged vinyl...?
Would be best to t5alk to several very experienced vinyl guys.
Alloy should be etched , like most metallic / plastics before applying paint systems

The paint isn't actually peeling yet, although maybe in time it will. The biggest issue looks like thinning/fading. I honestly think it's one of those paint jobs with a few coats but no hard clear coat to protect it from UV (which I think is quite common from this particular manufacturer).

I never thought of media blasting. Does soda blasting etc leave a particularly rough surface on the aluminium?

If going to the trouble of removing all the bad paint, would rather not have to deal with paint again, so would most likely want vinyl..

Sounds like it's a dark colour. The problem with dark colours that ages the paint is heat, not uv. If the paint is still intact and not peeling, just prep and paint straight over it.

If the paint is in-tact (no peeling, blistering, cracking etc) you should be able to lay vinyl over it.  Just follow the prep instructions for the vinyl.
