Spent an hour this morning trying to hook up to 1 of 4 kings that were working close to the shore line. Tried 5 or 6 different lures and soft baits to no avail.

The bait fish they were feeding on were small so will venture out to the tackle shop and try and match the hatch to see if that works.

If anybody has any recommendations for lures types etc it would be appreciated.

Will try again tomorrow...

Makka put me on to the GT Icecream and a small metal plug off the Busted Fishing site, and last summer I got two kingies from the shore on 1.5oz Icecreams - light little polyurethane material lures which skip on the surface like piper using a straight retrieve. I think they're from South Africa originally. Best in calm water.

If it's choppy you could try a little sinking 115mm Nomad Madscad, or one of the other small sinking stick baits most shops have now. FishInc and Shimano do them, and others.

There's an inexpensive little 30g skittering popper made by StrikePro which i've been told is good on harbour shoreline kingies, using a straight retrieve. I tried it for quite a while without any luck.

A small white/natural baitfish Z Man 4"/5" paddle tail softbait?

What about the old trout fishing trick of a fly just above the spinner?

The bigger flasher lure pulls them in to have a look, but they often hit the more realistic, less threatening fly.
