Fished 4 weeks ago (harling) and caught a beauty straight away - went back yesterday and no bites - thinking of different lures? as fish cant go deep its to shallow due to warmer temps?  Anyone tried jigging?

Good fishing trip nothing breaks, great trip catch fish.

Do you have any fly fishing gear?
If so, try drifting near the obvious weed beds with a floating line and a lightly weighted damsel nymph on the end. You don't need to cast. The line/s stream out behind the boat, and you'll hopefully suddenly see the line tighten - game on. We've had a lot of success doing that. You can use an indicator if you want to use heavier nymphs, or have trouble detecting takes, but any nymphs with a bit of inherent movement, marabou etc. should bring success.

Another option, if you only have spin gear, is to anchor or drift casting Rapala CD5 or CD7 lures. Focus on the weed edges, which is where the rainbows cruise. Browns tend to be inside the weed banks, in the shallows. Check out the YouTube clips of guys spinning with Rapalas on the Big O. Impressive results. I think that's 'Flyfisher' off the Forum.

Yes I do have fly fishing gear will try - I saw some guys floating a brightly coloured fluffy ball called I think a "boobie" in this way anchored up while out there.  Cheers John

good one.

That sounds like a 'heave it and leave it' style with a floating Globug. A true Booby has foam at the head and a marabou tail. But they both tend to be fished the same, cast well out into the lake on a fast sinking shooting head.Weird that the trout take the Globug in the middle of summer, but it's certainly effective at times. Same rig works at the Rotorua lakes such as Okataina and Tarawera in summer.
On all of those lakes you can fish the same rig on a spinning rod with a small ball sinker and a 1m trace (as long as you're not close to a stream mouth).

Thinking of fishing Lake O (or Taupo) sunday 7th but wondering what effect the stormy weather and lots of recent rain will have - the river at Taumarunui is well up and very dirty today Sat 6th?

Went down Sunday morning (actually went to Taupo first) both dirty and windier than forecast (taupo to windy) at Lake O talked to a guy launching a skiff with seagull outboard he said his mate went out Saturday on Lake O and water too dirty after rain - he thought it would settle next few days but giving it a go today.  I thought it looked to dirty today.

Been there the last three days, dirty water is only at the inlet end (clear today), it dissipates quickly through the lake to run clear at the outlet and the northern arm is usually always clear after rain - trouble is most of the drones that fish there, sit in the basin and watch indicators in the deep - not venturing out to the better areas! Fishing was sensational with fish to 5kg... best when it's ****ty weather as usual.
