How often should you replace the line on your game reels?

I have a 50w with line that is 3 odd seasons old, never caught a fish. Should I replace or just strip 30-50m off?

Lots of variables.
How many times out fishing with it?
How is it stored?
30-50 metres off per season, then turn it around or topshot with braid?

Wet probably 10 times. Stored on reel in garage. Never turned around or top shotted, just as is 24KG mono

Replace it...mono is cheap when you consider how much you would pay to still have a fish on after a line failure!!

It's a compression thing get half way down your spool and test the breaking strain while you are while replacing that will answer your question, and totally agree with above it's small cost in the grand scheme of things.Never heard anyone say I'm glad I didn't change that nylon and I didn't have to catch that fish

Replace it, I had a spool of Line that went off over a period of 12 months, because it sat in the top shelf in my Garage, where it got to 30-40°C at times.

Braid on the other hand lasts literally years, I have some over 15 years old and still tests at full strength.

In an ideal world I'd have only 30ws with braid then topshot...

Will replace I think

Good Question coroben, Id'e go new. It does deteriate over time with the amount of times in sea water. Loosing its gloss going bit dull looking, i renew as if ya hooked fish of a lifetime, don't want a break.

Dont take the risk ! replace it. I had my 1st failure in years last year while on a marlin with my 15KG outfit and on reflection it was the one set up that hadnt been swapped out in a while.

Thats why all the gear on ElDonna gets replaced a minimum of once a year and with the heavy gear after every other decent fish which is why I run dacron and topshots. T

Easy to replace a top shot !

P.S  the sunlight does most of the damage to mono sitting out there in the Sun for days on end :)

Depends on the brand too.
BTW replacing the top 30 -50m, reversing, or whatever isn't going to help IMHO as all the "old" lines I've tested break fairly evenly though their length. Remember the line further down the spool has been compressed (made slightly oval) every time it crosses itself and may have sat deformed like that from the time it was spooled. Take it off turn it around and you just doubled the deformities.
If your knots are good you'd be dam unlucky to have the line deteriorate low enough to break at 1/3 or even 1/2 it's rating. Mind you some IGFA 24kg lines will break well below 24kg brand new.

....making the braid with mono top-shot look even more appealing.

You can make several top-shots with loops for very quick change after a single fight, if you think that's needed, or even go to a different line weight.

What's the rule of thumb for the length of the top shot section.

The minimum is 5 metres but many others like up to 100M.
Don't really see there is any 'rule'.
I used to use about 60 metres. Always nice to know exactly how far out the fish is.
