I wonder if he would have been treated so lightly if he had resisted arrest and assaulted a policeman?  Fisheries officers do a difficult job and deserve the protection of the law.  This judge has certainly not done that.  The sentence seems light just for the fisheries offence.

Seems the fisheries officers did a great job and once again were let down by the Judge. Maybe it's time to not only name the offenders but also the press should name the judge who has let all of us down
slowly going where everyone else has already been

Another rogue recreational fishermen. We give commercial fishermen so much grief over the actions of a few, yet there are so many bad bad bad recreational guys. It would be nice to see harsher penalties

I have a great problem with the resisting arrest/ assault issue on officials... from police. ambulance, fire  thru to hospital staff.
There should have been more and far more charges to answer to with greater penialties.

Another rogue recreational fishermen. We give commercial fishermen so much grief over the actions of a few, yet there are so many bad bad bad recreational guys.

In this case I would say border line...
Many of the 'classified 'rec' who take excessive / undersized fish , usually means for illegal profit, commerce involved.
Once that is the case, it no longer becomes  "rec fisherman" rather should be described correctly as  Illegal commercial  fishing and fisherman.
Just because someone hasnt a quota for the fish they intend or do sell doesnt make them automatically a rec fisherman... quite the opposite.

Its like media calling a boy racer idiot a Hot Rodder.. which used to be common....
And that got changed over a long consistent campaign/  complaints to media from genuine 'Rodders and their clubs.

From memory the last incident was around 5yrs ago with a hearld article on a boy racer, with a picture from the skid pad at meremere with a $120K 69 camaro in a officially NZHRA sanschened  burnout comp

Steps, you are quite correct in what you're saying. The analogy of boy racers also makes sense.
But, they could only be classed as illegal commercial fishermen once proven in court that the gathering was done for financial gain. Until then, they will be classed as rec's and quite rightfully so. The rec sector is not squeaky clean as we would like to think so. A few bad apples make us all look bad.
You are spot on with the resisting arrest/assault offenses. That alone should have carried enough weight for a harsher sentence.

Im thinking more the PR aspect in the media, rather than the strictly 'legal' sense. So much, as we see from recent Commercial PR marketing  is about perception....
An organised letter, PR from rec fishermen / organisations to media pointing out people who fish, sell illegally are legal commercial fishermen rather than bad rec fishermen

Rec fishermen by definition do not have any gain.. unless they are good at the sport, and catch is more than costs and save of family food bill.
