Only 2 boats out chasing them Vance, although SBT have been caught/seen in as close as 15 miles anyone wanting to target them will need be 30-50 miles off the coast. SBT are here in great numbers during the winter but our weather patterns at this time does not allow many good days to get out if any. We tried last Wednesday and although the forecast was for light winds we had a good 20 knots of sloppy northerly so flagged it after a few hours of bashing our way into it.

Thanks Craig, and therein lies the problem, fish are there but so few days when the weather is good enough to get out there. Also a long way out if it does cut up rough.

Stonefish they actually come in quite close off Waihau Bay. I know a guy who fishes out of there in a 15 foot pontoon boat who went out a number of times a couple of years ago in the middle of winter, he was right out amongst the long liners, he had one hit that did not stick. He was going about 30-40 miles out. He would leave at 3am to get out there just before daylight. He is nuts. He is building a 7-8m boat so god knows where he will go with that, probably will get arrested by the Chillean navy.
But they do come in quite close off Cape Runaway, you would need to know how to read your SST charts and all that stuff and hope that there is a decent weather window when they come through.  
 
I think the places to chase them from with a trailer boat is out from Waihau Bay through to Napier.

Sharing more info from FB.Clap

Captain John Lifton-Jones with a nice Bigeye Tuna from a couple of years ago while working with me on the Zambuka.
John is still with the same company and now skippers the FV Bigeye targeting Tuna around New Zealand's East Coast. 
John has just returned to port and has been very generous in giving out some marks for the recreational fisherman wanting to target Southern Bluefin tuna. John says there are bluefin out there up to around 120kg with the average fish around 60kg.
So if you see John thank him and buy him a beer. 
The main pack of Southern Bluefin tuna are currently off Cape Runaway and the marks are
37 21 S
178 00 E
If you see the commercial boats out there show them some respect, keep out of their way and perhaps they will share some more information with me.

You should be able to work the rest out yourself or you shouldn't be going out there. 
Plus he's a big bugger and I don't want him chasing me because you guys have been pestering him.Its all about respect guys if you want to work together.

That's some really good info and those marks are only about 12 nautical miles off Cape Runaway or 16 off Waihau Bay boat ramp. Pity the weather has turned to custard.

Bob, yes they are still there, well they were yesterday, hopefully will still be after this blow has gone through, looks like there may be another short weather window on Wednesday, although I think it will still be pretty lumpy.

We're heading to Waihau next weekend to have a crack at these fellas, hopefully they hang around for another week. Any recommendations on lures to run? I'm thinking smallish type lures, RG2, enki etc. Colours?

Stonefish have a trawl back through this site for the lures that work off Portland Victoria http://www.facebook.com/wildblueportland/  A lot of the tuna are small but they get a fair few big ones around this time of the year. You will need to trawl back a  fair way. One lure that seems to work well there with the big tuna is the small/medium lumo sprocket, also remember a fair few big ones being caught on Rapala X-Raps.

I would be considering trolling items sub surface as well to compliment, hence the raps comment above.
Also lots of splashing, and well here's the opportunity to run that Greenstick.

Facebook is your friend, have a look at the NZFC and the NZ Big Game pages, there are heaps of photos of the fish that have been caught down there in recent weeks. the guys that have been posting the most photos looks like a Red Gill Fan. There was one photo I saw with an "old fashioned" Zuker 3.5 in abortion (Blue over yellow) Colours.

Seems like smaller lures are the go so far.
