No apologies to Flight of the Concords because it is gurnard time after all!

I offered a couple of spots for a dummy run to sort strategies out for the Grunter Hunter comp on June 11 (spammer Smudge). Yes I did run out of petrol, my fault but thanks to Skoti's dad who came to our rescue.

Sorry you couldn't make it Popeye, next time! Coxie's mum Julie and local junior legend Cody took me up for a spot on the boat.

We fished in 4m of water and put down about 10kg of secret berley. 'We probably won't catch anything til the turn of the tide in an hour'. I said. We spent the next hour catching mega gurnard. Then at my predicted start time things went quiet.

They stayed quiet all day all day with occasional squeals from me proclaiming 'It's a big gurnard!' only to reel in another tiny kahawai.

To be fair though we did get the odd gurnard swimming into our gear. We let two 35cm fish go and kept one at 38 and the remainder were mostly 42 to 46cm. I got one little 30cm snapper so all in all not a bad day for 16 kept gurnard and the snapper. We tried softies (zip), jigs (one), gurnard grabbers ( most successful rig), stray lines (two or three) and some other stuff I've forgotten.

The pics say it all really:

We only caught one snapper, 30cm in the pic. Four weeks ago it was hard to get through them.

Nice haul Smudge. I'm sure the frosts will come, my parents were saying it was cold in Clarkes Beach last night and frosts can't be too far away.

Any berley will do, none of the fish I cleaned today had any in their gut but where we fished there was little tidal flow and a brisk southerly. That had us fishing the opposite direction to where the berley was going which is a very bad thing. Better off not usinmg it in that situation.

For quite awhile have struggled to manage more than a very occasional gurnard on the Kaipara but today, after a couple of preceding early morning frosts, Vinnie & I finally caught a few, along with some respectable size snaps plus a few KY.

Collected a 20 ltr pail of oysters between us as well, so a good day all in all, with the added benefit of glassy smooth conditions following the frosts.
