You have to bear in mind this is a vertical block and the valves are horizontal and oil is fed from the top the laws of gravity apply here .

Because there's a leak in the system!?.

Check the specs of the engine for compression to hours,

It's leaking oil and then burning oil because the mechanical parts, are worn. Those in relation to the oil sump and orifices.

Rebuild those areas and problems solved.
Exactly-it has done reasonably high hours although not high high hours but the likelihood of it being anything else than a worn engine in this case is very remote especially if there is no obvious sign of an oil leak anywhere. I had a 90hp one of these from new and my Suzuki agent said that if it used any oil at all to get it back to him pronto. These engines are not designed to use any oil full stop. It probably will be a mixture of worn rings/bores/valve guides/seals. Although it's not likely to fail any time soon I would say you need to get used to the idea of getting it stripped and repaired or just keep topping up the oil. The amount of oil use you are quoting is around what a 2-stroke would use for 20 L of petrol. With the amount of oil it is using it gives me the impression that it has had some misuse at some stage and/or a lack of servicing before you bought it.

Bummer.

It occurs to me the guy who sold you the boat most likely knows what's up?

You might be able to get him to come clean and save yourself some time and money figuring it out for yourself.

You may have to promise not to kill him in his sleep etc to get him to talk....
